As we’re going through days of quarantine, unable to enjoy our favourite pastimes the way we used to, we turn to more accessible alternatives to cheer us up and give us much needed thrills. Movie escapism is arguably in the top 5 for most of us and whether you’re a fan of a genre or just want to satisfy your craving for a good story, there’s plenty to choose from.

Here are some of my recent picks. No, they’re not about a pandemic.

The Tiger King (Netflix)

If you feel that the coronavirus has stolen the limelight and all the outrageous acts of the world have faded into obscurity, you’re wrong. Having sat through this highly acclaimed mini-series documentary you will rest assured that various forms of legalised insanity are alive, well, and allowed to thrive in plain sight. If riches can be a major part of one’s ego, why not tigers, lions and other exotic animals? No Hollywood drama, just next level ugly reality on this one.

The Office (BBC) (Amazon Prime)

If wild cats, guns and revenge aren’t your thing, Amazon Prime now lets you watch ‘The Office’, an uncomfortably realistic, documentary-style British comedy classic with Japanese subtitles! I thoroughly enjoyed watching it yet again, having a hearty laugh at the narcissistic, cringe-inducing behaviour of the manager and his minions at the office of a paper company based in Slough, England.

Small Time / The Surface (Amazon Prime)

Finally, away from the manic world of inflated egos and psychotic, attention seeking bosses are these two underrated films. Small Time is a look at a struggling second-hand car business where questionable practices are passed on to younger generations. The Surface is a curious survival story of a crash involving a motorboat and an airplane. What do these two movies have in common? Well, you won’t be swept away by a surge of adrenaline and action excitement as they don’t pretend to aim to achieve just that. However, if you need a motivational story or yourfaith in humanity needs restoring, you might just walk away with a feeling of encouragement and contentedness. I actually enjoyed these two heart-warming titles more than most on my streaming services. But each to their own :)

Stay safe and enjoy watching.
