i don't think anyone knows this dj nor does anyone own this mix cd in japan except for few people. the reason is that you could get this mix cd only in the limited places in states (probably, maybe some other places). he was my roommate when I lived in the states. we always played at cafes and clubs together. as he was a part-time employee of a record store, he had so many of good records. he has really good taste of music.

so, about this mix cd, it's really smooth, that's it. the set is programmed with what i'm calling by my self "mellow house" tracks being the center part of this. i feel really comfortable listening this mix cd as bgm while doing something else. now, i'm listening while writing this, and again it gives me warm atmosphere. well done, jeff!!

when i play, i always try to mix tracks smoothly. of course, i do use cut-ins and outs but what i like is making a flow of music. yes, that's it. and when i make mic cd, i of course try to do it but sometimes some mixes were not like what i imagined after listening to finished cd. how well making the flow, that is it.

by the way, i often see in record reviews like "dj xxx plays a lot!!," "dj xxx plays the song in his/her party," etc., and i wonder what those reiviewers base that on. i always wonder about that. if they get information from such dj's weekly top 10 lists or something, then i can understand. or i could probably understand if those revewers say he/she heard such dj's play such songs when they came over to japan...

mad dog

mad dog - 20/20 ep

remixed by natural rhythm and east coast boogiemen

released in 2004 (peaches music)

side a

1. avec du gigolo

(remix & additional production by blaine copperfield)

side aa

1. p.u.m.p.

(re-bling by butch arley the junkyard playa)

2. zooma zoom

(remix & aditional production by tahm solo)

this is the one bought in gramaphone records in chicago. i don't know much about the origina source but the track on side a is a french vocal stuff called "avec du gigolo." it's really jazz (like in the 40's) style, yet this is house. it's really a good track.

1st track on the flip side was like trax with the first half is like a minimal synth wth "pump it up" vocal looped over and over and male disco-like vocal comes in the latter half, and gradually bring the vibe.

2nd rack is like the reconstract track of later in the 80's to early in the 90's track.

in es project

i'm feelin' good! / in es project

released in 2002 (inhouse) dj promo

this is the track of nina simone's "i'm feelin' good" remixed by todd terry. intro starts with some percussions but no bass drums, and nina simone sings (intro part is pretty long), and then the 4/4-beat comes in right after the phrase "i'm feelin' good." this surely gives me some groove. and in the break part, live source was used and again, the beat comes in right after the same phrase, and i'm like "eeeehhhhhhaaaaaaaa!!"

flip side is without 4/4 beats. it's kinda off beat.

kidgusto

kidgusto heat beats

released in 2005 (true grooves ) promotinal copy

side a

1. heat beats

2. east to west breaks

side b

1. calling all absentees

2. manha de canaval

i don't know much about the artist but he has been making tracks for years now. as far as listening to the recrod, i am like why i have never encountered his works.

all of the tracks in this record were really nice such as percussive disco dub "heat beats," "east to west breaks" and "calling all absentees" were break beats with middle and near eastern vocal with star and "manha de cavanal" which has elegical acoustic guitar melodies. it seems that this 12" record is really rare as all the tracks in this is nothing but with all really cool tracks.

side d

1. "head west - gun fight at the o.k. corall" / howie b. inc.

2. "they came in peace" / tranquility bass

3. "in flux (alternative interlude '93 version)" / dj shadow

this is a compilation album of abstract / trip hop (dated...?) tracks released in 1994. the album's price had gone higher in the past in second-hand market but since the re-issue was released, i guess the price is now stable at reasonable range.

many records like this stuff had started to release at that time, and i played this stuff at cafes. oh,

i remember that i djed with sax player, jim at a cafe. i guess this tyle, dj and live musician, is not big of a surprise nowadays.

the album starts tracks which made with samples taken from old jazz stuff or based on jazz stuff such as "freedom now" which sampled the bass line of john coltrane's "a lovespreme,"

"contemplating jazz" with beautiful vocal comes after that, "symmetrcal jazz" wich starts with some warning to the world like "we now have to deal with our own self-destruction..."

of course, there are many other really cool tracks by nightmares on wax, la funk mob, tranquility bass, u.n.k.l.e., howie b, dj shadow, etc. if you get a chance, please take a moment to listen to this album.

funky magic

"funky magic" / jungle brothers vs. skeewiff

released in 2005 (rambling records )

side a

01. funky magic main mix

side b

01. funky magic instrumental

02. funky magic acapella

oh well, i too bought this record. this is a jb's new song, originally realsed by godiego called "the birth of the odyssey - monkey magic" which was the main theme for famous 70's tv program called "saiyuki." in addition to that, skeewiff had their hands in this. i used to watch the tv program when i was a littl kid (well, you could guess my age...); therefore, i must get this one.

the track was different from what i imagined before i bought this but still the track is really cool. the base track is kind of minimal break beats yet tight, synth melody was used like original (it's like an old school break beats), and jb's rap on the track. what i liked also was the phrase "funky magic" in native english accent (of course, it has to be so).

idjut boys

idjut boys / smokin' balls

released in 2005 (headinghome recordings )

a1. main balls

a2. guitar bit

b1. balls dub

b2. ball beat.

b3. bass bonus

you know what it is, this is idjut boys. they did again their fierce dub effects!! well, the title is "smokin' balls," they got me. i have been buying their records since mid 90's whenever i saw their records at stores.

mike dixon

mike dixon2

mike dixon / christmas ep

released in 2002 (g-swing)

a1. swing my jingle bells

b2. merry g-swing christmas

it is the christmas time approaching and this is the record for the occasion. this surely is one for christmas time released by mike dixon in 2002. a1 is the track with 40's swing jazzy kind of "jingle bells" and the lylics "jingle bells...." is looped on and on on top of 4/4 beats. this is the house track characterized by g-swing style of 40's jazz.

b1 is the track nicely arranged the original source (i forgot the song title but everyone has definitely heard before). the phrase "g-swing" is effectively used in the track and it is like the one presented by g-swing. i like both sides of the records, and i always play them at this time.

cd recorder

when you record track(s) to cd from record(s), how do you do that? i simply record track to cd with audio cd recorder connected to mixer... however, it is difficult to make cue point as i cannot record exactly the same start point a track on record starts..... there is always at least one second delayed in the track recorded to cd.
