ダンブッラ石窟寺院総面積2,100m2に及ぶ広大な石窟群で、スリランカで最も保存状態が良いとされる仏教寺院
紀元前1世紀ワッタガーマニ・アパヤ王が南インドから侵略を逃れ、この地で身を隠したことから始まる。後に王座に返り咲き、感謝の証とし寺院を建立した。
内部に約150体の仏像が安置され、壁面と天井は色鮮やかな仏教画で埋め尽くされている。
Dambulla Cave Temple is a vast cave complex covering a total area of 2,100 m2 and is said to be the best-preserved Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka. It dates back to the 1st century BC, when King Vattagamani Appaya hid here, fleeing invasions from South India. He later returned to the throne and built the temple as a token of gratitude. Approximately 150 Buddha statues are enshrined inside, and the walls and ceilings are covered with vibrant Buddhist paintings.
