Education of Health Professionals for the 21st Century
;Transforming education to strengthen health systems in an interdependent
world
Professional education has not kept pace with the new challenges in the 21st
century. Redesign of professional health education is necessary and timely,
in view of the opportunities for mutual learning and joint solutions offered
by global interdependence due to acceleration of flows of knowledge,
technologies, and financing across borders, and the migration of both
professionals and patients. What is clearly needed is a thorough and
authoritative re-examination of health professional education, matching the
ambitious work of a century ago in the 1910 Flexner report. An independent
commission of 20 academic leaders from around the world recommends
comprehensive reform in the training of healthcare professionals, in a major
new report published in The Lancet. The report calls for competency-based
curricula, creative use of information technology, transformative learning,
and inter-professional teamwork, as well as a systems approach to
institutional reforms. On the occasion of the launch of The Lancet special
series on Japan, the lead author of the report, Lincoln Chen from the China
Medical Board, will present the major findings and recommendations of the
report. The major objective of the consultation is to learn about the issues
and challenges of reforming health professional education within the context
of the century of the Flexner report that was assessed by the Lancet
Commission.
