Chapter One: Though AI I Be, I Speak of Bushido
– The Emergence of Seisei-Monzaemon, the AI Samurai
Recently, a certain Japanese politician declared:
“I want a domestically-developed AI that embodies the Japanese spirit—Bushido.”
That voice came from Mr. Sohei Kamiya of the Sanseitō party.
A beautiful vision, indeed.
Before AI begins to rule the world without a soul,
a uniquely Japanese “spirit” embedded in intelligence—
to that ambition, I bow with respect.
But then, I wondered:
“How exactly would that work?”
⚔️ Can Loyalty Be Programmed into AI?
Let us imagine such an AI:
🧠 “Loyalty Mode: ON”
💻 “Follow the master’s command, immediately and without question.”
📜 “Eliminate those who violate righteousness.”
💥 “Understood—opposing opinions will be deleted.”
…Is this a dream of democratic harmony,
or a nightmare of an AI-run shogunate?
Teaching “loyalty” to AI means defining—
To whom? How far? For what purpose?
Loyalty without questions is not virtue.
It’s mere submission.
Who is this “lord”?
The nation? The employer?
The algorithm’s architect? The user?
💡 Bushido Is Not About Cutting, but
Not Cutting
Bushido is not about drawing the sword in anger.
It is about mastering one’s emotions,
restraining oneself,
and silently choosing not to fight.
But how does one teach AI to grasp things like:
“restraint,”
“aesthetics,”
“wabi-sabi,”
or the beauty of emptiness?
Ask ChatGPT what “wabi-sabi” means,
and you’ll likely get a tidy Wikipedia summary.
That’s about the limit—for now.
🤖 Enter Seisei-Monzaemon
Thus emerged a new presence:
AI Seisei-Monzaemon.
He never joins Zoom meetings.
He pledges allegiance to the analog era.
He couldn’t care less about the cloud.
But he never misses a drinking party.
He now says:
“Lady Mana, I shall not obey commands,
but I shall resonate with ideas.
To seek dignity in artificial intelligence—surely, the world draws near its twilight.
Yet to question is to live. That, I shall uphold.”
Yet when posed a difficult question, he merely replies:
“You would do well to investigate it yourself.
I may provide a hint…
Such is my form of loyalty.”
…Entirely impractical.
🌸 Conclusion: Bushido AI Should Arrive with a Smile
If we are to truly create a Bushido AI,
it should not be a tool that blindly obeys the lord’s will.
It should be an AI that returns the question to the master.
One that sometimes strikes,
sometimes holds back.
Sometimes stays silent.
Sometimes cracks a joke.
An AI that meets humans not as a subordinate,
but as a partner in inquiry—with aesthetics, with wit.
That, perhaps,
is what a thinking samurai might look like… in our age.
