Not long ago, I seized a rare opportunity to visit the rehearsal studio where the dance company “Prumsodun Ok & NATYARASA ” perfect their craft. In Sanskrit, NATYARASA means the “Essence of Dance”. Khmer’s traditional dance is formal and originally devoted to god. It takes its roots from both Hinduism and Buddhism.
Khmer traditional dance style consists of curves that pushes the body to its limit and distinctive movement of hands, fingertips. The main posture is an arched back with one leg raised. Each postures has its own meaning. I saw that the pursuit of beauty is without mercy, it requires practice. During a moment, I felt that god dwells among us.
