1969年7月、真っ白なジャケットにセピア色の
印字を施した2枚組のレコードが出、
世間の度肝を抜いた。
Great White Wonderと題されたそのレコードの主役は
Bob Dylanだが、ディランは勿論、彼のレコードを配給する
Columbia Recordsも与り知らぬところから突如出、
皆を仰天させたのである。
そのディランをきっかけに、ブートレグというものの
存在が少しずつ音楽ファンの間で広がってゆき、
当該ミュージシャンやレコード会社と、
世界中で蠢くブートレガーの綱引きが、
この40年くらいのうちに繰り返されてきた。
Grateful Deadなどは、商用に利用しなければ
という条件で、ライヴ会場でのダビングや、
その音源の流通を広く認めてきたし、
先のディランも、1991年を皮切りに、
『ブートレグ・シリーズ』というアルバムを
定期的に出している。
The Beatlesの『アンソロジー』は、ブートレグの
存在がなければ、永久にこの世に出なかったわけだし、
Sony/Lagacyは2011年以来、Miles Davisの
『ブートレグ・シリーズ』をリリースしている。

The Rolling Stonesがブートレグの存在を初めて意識したのは、
70年のGet Yer Ya-Ya's Out!の時だろう。
Mick Taylor加入直後のライヴを、1年と待たずに
切ったのは、ブートレガーを意識したからだ。
本作は2002 - 2003年に行われた『リックス・ツアー』の
演奏を収録した2枚組ライヴ盤。
こんなに大ボリュームになったのは、勿論
ブートレグ対策だ。
しかも1枚目には冒頭のBrown Sugarを筆頭に、
ストーンズ初心者をウェルカムする代表曲がズラリ、
2枚目はコアなファン向けに、Neighboursや
Beast of Burdenなんて曲を集めている。
90年代以降の曲を大削減することで、
Forty Licksのようにスカスカにならずに
済んでいる。
しかもキースがスタンダードのThe Nearness of Youを
歌う場面まで収録されている。
願わくば、Tumbling DiceとMidnight Ramblerも
収録してほしかった。
