California’s worker pension, the nation’s largest, will be paying more money into its private-equity portfolio than it receives from those investments for eight years in a row. The engine maker Cummins took a 4.4% loss in its U.K. pension last year, in large part because it sold private assets at a discount.

The U.S. military launched a clandestine program amid the COVID crisis to discredit China’s Sinovac inoculation - payback for Beijing’s efforts to blame Washington for the pandemic. One target: the Filipino public. Health experts say the gambit was indefensible and put innocent lives at risk.
Reuters identified at least 300 accounts on X, formerly Twitter, that matched descriptions shared by former U.S. military officials familiar with the Philippines operation. Almost all were created in the summer of 2020 and centered on the slogan #Chinaangvirus - Tagalog for China is the virus.

They start when a fund generates a burst of high performance. Maybe an “active” ETF run by stock pickers buys a few big winners. Or maybe a passive fund that holds everything in a benchmark tracking one market segment has gotten hot.
In either case, people notice. They buy the fund in droves, pouring in hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars. The ETF’s managers take that cash and pump it into the stocks the fund already owns.
If those stocks are small and thinly traded, the fund’s own buying will drive their prices up. That will raise its return again, attracting even more money from performance-chasers, pushing the prices of the fund’s stocks even higher and drawing in another blast of hot money.

The crisis is being driven by overstretched resources in both hospital and community services that haven’t kept up with the increasing demands of an ageing and increasingly sick population. “Corridor care” is one dangerous element of this equation.
The Royal College of Emergency Medicines estimates many thousands of deaths linked to delays have taken place over the last two years.

Four people who spent three days off Earth in September 2021 experienced physical and mental changes that included modest declines in cognitive tests, stressed immune systems and genetic changes within their cells, scientists report in a package of papers published on Tuesday in the journal Nature and several other related journals.
Almost all of what changed in the astronauts returned to normal after they splashed down on Earth. None of the alterations appeared to pose a showstopping caution for future space travelers. But the results also highlighted how little medical researchers know.
