Mexicans went to the polls Sunday as two women face off in an election that will result in the country having its first ever female head of state.
Close to 100 million Mexicans are eligible to cast ballots amid a public security crisis and political polarization. The vote is seen as a referendum on the government of nationalist President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has maintained approval ratings above 60% throughout his term. Mexican law doesn’t allow for re-election.
Voters will also elect a new Congress, nine state governors and thousands of state and municipal officials.

OPEC+ agreed on Sunday to extend most of its deep oil output cuts well into 2025 as the group seeks to shore up the market amid tepid demand growth, high interest rates and rising rival U.S. production.
Brent crude oil prices have been trading near $80 per barrel in recent days, below what many OPEC+ members need to balance their budgets. Worries over slow demand growth in top oil importer China have weighed on prices alongside rising oil stocks in developed economies.

Gunmen have killed the female mayor of a town in Mexico just hours after the country celebrated the election of Claudia Sheinbaum as the nation's first woman president.
Yolanda Sanchez was shot in the town of Cotija, which she had governed since September 2021.
She was the first woman to be elected to the post.
Widespread violence against politicians has overshadowed Mexico's general election, which saw two women run for the presidency.
Yolanda Sanchez was ambushed by gunmen in the centre of Cotija, Michoacan, on Monday.

Canada’s central bank said a cut was warranted because officials are now increasingly confident that inflation is moving closer to their 2% target.
Bank of Canada Gov. Tiff Macklem said more rate cuts could be in the offing should inflation show further signs of slowing, though he added the pace of reductions would likely be gradual. He also warned households, businesses and governments that rates are unlikely to return to pre-pandemic levels.
The Bank of Canada lowered its target for the overnight rate to 4.75% from 5%, where it sat for 11 months.

The World Health Organization said on Wednesday a death was caused by the first laboratory-confirmed human case of infection with a subtype of avian influenza.
WHO said the 59-year-old resident of Mexico had died on April 24 after developing a fever, shortness of breath, diarrhoea, nausea and general discomfort.
This was the first laboratory-confirmed human case of infection with A(H5N2) subtype of bird flu reported globally and the first H5 virus infection in a person reported in Mexico.
