In the two years since Russia invaded Ukraine, the U.S. defense industry has experienced a boom in orders for weapons and munitions.
Business is coming from European allies trying to build out their military capabilities as well as from the Pentagon, which is both buying new equipment from defense manufacturers and replenishing military stocks depleted by deliveries to Ukraine.
Industrial production in the U.S. defense and space sector has increased 17.5% since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago, according to Federal Reserve data.

Poverty levels in Argentina hit 57.4% in January, the highest in at least 20 years, according to a report by the Catholic University of Argentina (UCA) cited by local media on Sunday.
According to the report, the devaluation of the peso currency carried out by President Javier Milei shortly after his inauguration in early December - and the price hikes caused by it - exacerbated poverty levels, which closed the year at 49.5%.
In December, his government rolled out sweeping economic reforms, primarily a 54% peso devaluation against the U.S. dollar, causing Argentines' incomes to collapse as prices shot up.

Gross domestic product (GDP) plunged 19.4% on an annualized basis compared with the July-to-September quarter, when it grew by a revised 1.8%, Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics said Monday in its initial estimate.
The worse-than-expected decline was driven by a 26.9% drop in private consumption, as confidence plummeted following the October 7 attacks and households cut back on spending.
Fixed investment by businesses tumbled 67.8%, “driven by a near-halt in residential building resulting from military call-ups and a reduction in Palestinian workers,” according to Liam Peach, senior emerging markets economist at Capital Economics. Exports declined 18.3.%.

Shares of Arm, whose designs power almost all the mobile devices in the world, have gained 67% since it disclosed better-than-expected results this month. Investors are betting it will also benefit from the rising use of its chip blueprints in data centers. SoftBank’s own stock has surged 29%.
While Arm’s profit outlook did come ahead of analysts’ expectations, the rally is also partly driven by its small public float. SoftBank still owns 90% of the company after listing it on Nasdaq last year. That has led to wild swings when a lot of investors suddenly want to buy. The stock on average traded more than half of its public float every day in the past week or so.

The country’s crude oil output is expected to increase by just 170,000 barrels a day in 2024 from last year, down from a jump of 1 million barrels a day in 2023, according to federal record-keepers. That is the smallest annual increase since 2016, not counting the pandemic.
Gushers of new U.S. crude have helped cap soaring oil prices despite OPEC production cuts and global turmoil, including most recently in the Middle East. The gains were driven by private producers that commandeered rigs after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sent prices soaring to more than $120 a barrel in early 2022.
