This spring, for the first time since 1803, two cicada groups known as Brood XIX, or the Great Southern Brood, and Brood XIII, or the Northern Illinois Brood, are set to appear at the same time, in what is known as a dual emergence.
The last time the Northern Illinois Brood’s 17-year cycle aligned with the Great Southern Brood’s 13-year period, Thomas Jefferson was president. After this spring, it’ll be another 221 years before the broods, which are geographically adjacent, appear together again.

The National Security Agency has been buying Americans’ web browsing data from commercial data brokers without warrants, intelligence officials disclosed in documents made public by a US senator Thursday.
The purchases include information about the websites Americans visit and the apps that they use, said Oregon Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden, releasing newly unclassified letters he received from the Pentagon in recent weeks confirming the sales.

The largest U.S. base in the Middle East is located in Qatar, known as Al Udeid Air Base and built in 1996. Other countries where the U.S. has a presence include Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

At least 10 countries, some of them the agency’s biggest donors, have suspended funding following allegations that at least 12 of its employees had connections to Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel that authorities say killed about 1,200 people and saw some 240 others abducted.
The halt in funding threatens to hit Gaza’s 2.2 million Palestinians at a point when food shortages and a lack of shelter and medical services are becoming more severe. More than 85% of the population has already been displaced amid Israel’s bombardment and land invasion.

Russian assets frozen in European accounts are generating billions of dollars in interest payments that could be diverted to help repair Ukraine’s war-torn economy -- and the European Union just took a step closer to doing that.
After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Western countries froze nearly half of Moscow’s foreign reserves -- some 300 billion euros ($327 billion). Around 200 billion euros ($218 billion) sits in the European Union -- mostly at Euroclear, a financial institution that keeps assets safe for banks, exchanges and investors.
