日本語訳は可能な限り前から後ろに訳している。その癖をつけないと、早く読んだり、耳で聞いて理解するようにはならないからだ。話し言葉は前から順に消えていくので、聞き手は前から順に理解している。日本語は結論が後に来ると言われるが、文脈から聞き手は結末を予測しているのだ。
英語では結論が先に来るので、聞き手はその詳細を期待することになる。例えば、何かが最も上がったなどという表現の後には、期間や範囲を限定する表現が続く。その後に理由やその他の詳細が続くのだ。だから英語での討論では「いったい何がいいたいの？」などということはなく、聞き手が話し手を途中で遮って、「あなたの言いたいことは分かるが、、、」と自分の意見を述べることもできるのだ。

Uniper's share price tumbled 20 percent after it revised a financial forecast, saying that it expected earnings to be “significantly below” those of previous years. The company, based in Dusseldorf, is Germany’s largest importer of Russian gas. Since mid-June, the company said, it has been receiving only 40 percent of the gas it ordered from Gazprom, forcing it to purchase gas on the spot market “at significantly higher prices.”
This month, Gazprom reduced the amount of gas it was sending to Europe through Nord Stream 1, an undersea pipeline that links Russian gas fields to Germany's northeastern coast. The reduced supplies have forced utilities across Europe to buy gas at high prices as governments scramble to fill storage tanks before winter.
Germany's economy minister, Robert Habeck, has warned that if Russian gas deliveries remain as low as they are now, the country could face a shortage by winter.
He said the financial squeeze on German energy companies could be severe, comparing the contagion effect to the way the collapse of Lehman Brothers triggered the global financial crisis.

For the first time in more than three decades, Germany has posted a monthly trade deficit, the most recent sign that Europe’s largest economy is facing stress because of interrupted supply chains and record energy prices linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Exports have been the economic engine in Germany for years, but the steep rise in the price of energy, driven by Russia’s moves to restrict the amount of natural gas it is delivering to Europe, has driven up the price of products made in Germany.
Exports in May fell 0.5 percent from April, while imports rose 2.7 percent, leaving a gap of 1 billion euros, or roughly $1 billion, according to figures released by Federal Statistics Office on Monday. It was the first time that imports had exceeded exports since 1991, the year after the reunification of the formerly socialist East Germany with the capitalist West Germany.
The sudden reversal could signal weakness in parts of the German economy, where one in four jobs relies on exports. The reliance on imported energy -- before the start of the war, Russia supplied more than half the country’s natural gas -- has added to the cost pressures on German firms.

Maybe something good will come from inflation after all. President Joe Biden is close to axing at least some of the tariffs his predecessor levied on about $350 billion of goods the United States imports from China. His administration reckons they hurt consumers. A better reason would be that they failed to change China’s ways in the first place.
China originally agreed to buy an additional $200 billion in U.S. goods over two years and make substantive policy changes. That didn’t happen. China bought none of those extra American imports, according to the Peterson Institute.
Inflation at a 40-year-high has caused a rethink. The American Action Forum reckons the tariffs on items like toys, paint and soap, cost consumers about $50 billion a year. That’s why some on Biden’s team, including the president, are leaning toward scrapping some of them as early as this week, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Peterson estimates the competitive impact of getting rid of all the levies could lead to a 1 percentage point drop in the consumer price index, which rose 8.6% year-over-year in May.

The Russian army is transforming Europe’s largest nuclear power plant into a military base overlooking an active front, intensifying a monthslong safety crisis for the vast facility and its thousands of staff.
At the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in southern Ukraine, more than 500 Russian soldiers who seized the plant in March have in recent weeks deployed heavy artillery batteries and laid anti-personnel mines along the shores of the reservoir whose water cools its six reactors, according to workers, residents, Ukrainian officials, and diplomats.
The Ukrainian army holds the towns dotted on the opposite shore, some 3 miles away, but sees no easy way to attack the plant, given the inherent danger of artillery battles around active nuclear reactors.
The new infusion of weaponry effectively shields the plant from a counterattack by Ukrainian forces, and amounts to something the carefully regulated atomic-energy industry has never seen before: the slow-motion transformation of a nuclear power station into a military garrison.
In a lesser-scrutinized aspect of its war strategy, the Russian army is day-by-day positioning the weaponry around a nuclear plant that is among the world’s largest, using it to cement control of the front line where their advance through southern Ukraine ground to a halt.

Sanctions on Russia for what Moscow calls a "special military operation" to disarm Ukraine have sent prices for liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal to all-time highs, underpinning record revenue for Australia's second- and third-largest exports.
"The outlook is for the prices of energy commodities to remain strong for longer than previously forecast, as Western nations look for alternatives to Russian energy supplies," the Department of Industry said in its resources and energy quarterly report.
However it said higher global interest rates to combat inflation could hurt global economic activity and in turn lower resource and energy export earnings.
