Eu: Why do you look so glum, Emery? Did you receive
some bad news?
E: (still staring at her monitor)
I just can't figure this out.
(pointing to the homepage she is viewing)
N: What's the matter with it?
E: Well, I tried to purchase something online
and the site rejected my chosen payment option.
Eu: Which one did you choose?
E: I chose to pay by credit card.
N: Hmmm... do you have any outstanding bill? Or gone
beyond your credit limit?
Eu: Are you kidding?
Emery uses her plastic once in a blue moon.
E: Honestly, I can't remember when I last used it.
(chuckling a bit)
Eu: I see. It's really nice to have a lot of dough
　　 on hand.
E: Look who's talking! The last time I used my Visa
was last year probably.
N: Geez, Emery! Are you sure it's still with you?
E: Of course.
(fishing her card out of her wallet)
N: I know! Maybe the system thought it was a
fraudulent credit card charge.
Eu: Yeah, since your account has been inactive for
quite some time, your recent activity must have set
off the alarm bells in their system.
N/Eu: Ha ha ha! (laughing in unison)
N: The system must have detected it as a credit card
fraud. (teasing Emery some more)
E: You guys are so supportive! (saying sarcastically)
Eu: Hey, what are friends for, right? (winking at Nicole)
If I remember correctly, Nicole also had an episode
with her card. Right, Nicole?
E: They also rejected your card?
N: You could say that. (smiling timidly)
The magnetic strip at the back of the card was
damaged so they had to replace it.
Eu: Nicole's card was your card's alter ego.
It was too active!

E: クレジットカード払いよ。

越えてるとか。
Eu: まさか。エメリーはクレジットカードをほとんど使わない
のよ。

E: よく言うわ！前回ビザカードを使ったのはおそらく去年ね。

N: わかった！システムは不正な借り入れのあるカードだと思
ったんじゃない。
Eu: ええ、だってあなたの口座はもうかなり長い間使われてな
いから最近の出入金履歴をシステムが相殺しちゃったに違
いないわ。
N/Eu: ハハハ！（いっしょに笑う）
N: システムがクレジットカード詐欺だと見破ったに違いないわ。
（エメリーをさらにからかい）
E: あなたたちってとっても協力的ね！（イヤミっぽく言う）
Eu: ちょっと、友だちでしょ？（ニコルに目配せする）
わたしの記憶が正しければ、ニコルもカードについて

N: そうとも言えるわね。（小さくなってほほ笑み）
カードの裏の磁気帯が損傷したから、交換してもらわないと

Y - Hmm. What should I write?
J - Well, anything from the reasons why you like Christmas, your
wishes for yourself, your family and, to the world.)
(Yumi thought about her wish, and then began writing it)
L2 - How about you, Ms. Marie, do you have any other suggestions?
M - You can also define the real essence of Christmas, such as,
"It's the season of giving".
L2 - It's quite difficult, but I'll give it a try.
(Sae writes her message)
Yumi and Sae - We're finished.
J - Now, please hook it on the Christmas tree for everyone to see.
(Yumi and Sae hooked theirs respectively)
Y - There you go. (reads other learners' messages) This one
says "I wish for everyone's happiness," and here, "Peace to
the world". I feel a little selfish. I only wished for

Sh: Meeting adjourned.
E : Wait! Could we have five minutes' extension, please?
S : Did you forget something?
Em: Actually, it was National Boss Day last week. No, not
in Japan, but in America and some other countries.
F : We thought we'd grab the opportunity to pay tribute
to our own boss who has been so supportive to us.
N : (Holding a small basket with strips of paper in it)
All employees wrote down a message for you, Shima, by
completing the sentence, "Only Shima can ___." Ready?

The basket is passed around; each employee picks one and...

U : Could I start? "Only Shima can come up with
unconventional solutions to conventional problems.
He has a great mind and a heart of gold."
S : How poetic! Should I continue with this one? (reading)
"Only Shima takes us to fancy restaurants." Hahaha!
F : Makes sense! He has a heart of GOLD so he could afford
to treat us all.
N : My turn. "Only Shima can spare time to assist employees
in all their needs, whether they be work-related or not."
E : In a similar note, "Only Shima offers a helping hand
without asking anything in return, and is willing to
give you a ride, take you to the doctor, be an
interpreter... all at the same time."

Shima has a fixed smile as he intently listens to all the
other messages.

Em: And lastly, "Only Shima brings fruits, yogurt, bottled
water..."
F : (interrupting) Did you say yogurt and fruits?
Em: Uh-huh.
N & E: (exchanging looks, doing sign language and uttering
at the same time) Neither did you?!
F : I received bottled water in the aftermath of the 3/11
earthquake.
E : You mean when we were like under house arrest in fear
of absorbing radiation outside?
U : Hmm... I smell favoritism in the air...
S : You should be glad you didn't receive any. Shima gave
them when someone was sick.
Em: Why are you so defensive? Nobody said anything.
Sh: Whoa! (Looking concerned about the exchanges) Maybe I
should just stop...
F : ...being generous? (looking at the others as if scolding
them)
N : No, no, no, no, no! We're not complaining at all! In
fact...
