As soon as everyone looked comfortably settled into their
seats...

S: I brought something for everyone. (holding up the paper
bags he was toting)

To the delight of his classmates and governess, Samu handed
each one a large paper bag filled to the brim with fresh
produce.

S: Yup, these came from our harvest. (grinning from ear to ear)

Everyone expressed their appreciation for Samu's generosity.

M: Look at all these vegetables! (peeking inside the bag)
I know what I'm having for dinner.
H: Same here. This broccoli will surely complete my chicken
casserole. My husband will be ecstatic!
(smiling at everyone)
S: I'm glad that you all like the product of my sweat, so to
speak.
N: Of course we do. You are our perennial vegetable grower
in this class. How do you do it?

Samu explained how he starts with seedlings and how they are
grown organically.

M: That's what you call labor of love!
N: I really envy your green thumb, Samu. (sighing slightly)
S: It's easy and therapeutic.
N: That's true. I heard that some people who finished some
counseling are advised to take care of plants before they
get involved with someone.
H: That's interesting! Does that mean gardening is a good
gauge of how well you do in relationships?
M: Maybe... maybe not.
S: What do you think, Nicole? (hinting about Nicole's failed
attempts to take care of plants)
N: Totally disagree!
H: I knew you would.

The class exploded into laughter.

クラスメートとガヴァネスにとってうれしいことに、サムはあふれ
んばかりの新鮮な野菜の入った大きな紙袋を一人ずつに手渡した。

S: そうだよ、うちで採れた野菜。（満面の笑みを浮かべ）

みんなサムの気前の良さに感謝する。

M: 見てよこの野菜！（紙袋の中をのぞき）
夕食何にするかわかったわ。
H: 私も。このブロッコリーで鶏肉のキャセロールが完成するわ。
夫が大喜びすること間違いなしだわ！
（みんなにほほ笑み）
S: みんな気にいってくれてよかったよ、言うならば僕の汗の産物
をね。
N: もちろんよ。あなたはこのクラスの永遠の野菜栽培者じゃない。
どうやって育てているの？

サムは、どう苗植えし、どう有機栽培されていくかを説明した。

M: そういうのを好きだからできる仕事って言うのよ！
N: 本当にあなたの園芸の才がうらやましいわ、サム。
（ちょっとため息をつき）
S: 簡単だし、癒し効果もあるよ。
N: それ本当ね。カウンセリングを終えた人が、他の人と関わる前に
植物を育てるように勧められるって聞いたわ。
H: 興味深いわね！それって、園芸がいい人間関係を築くいいはかり
になるってこと？
M: かもしれないし...そうじゃないかも。
S: どう思う、ニコル？（ニコルが過去に植物を育てるに失敗した
例をほのめかし）
N: 大いに反対！
H: そうだろうと思った。

クラスみんなドッと笑う。

　　Kindly look through this for your approval.
J - (looks at the total figures) Hmm. Almost one-third of our
current learners will attend the party, quite a percentage.
W - Actually, the other reason why I submitted this to you is
to ask about the budget for the giveaways, awards and prizes.
J - Uh-oh. Here we go again, deciding about allocations. Well, I
was just wondering, if we are to make this event really big
and special, so does the giveaways, etc., right?
(Willibee nods)
Then, they should be unique, useful and memorable, but we
also have to be thrifty.
W - Well, since you seem to be canny enough to mention that, why
not order and buy during your trip back home, where you
can request for personalized items at a lower price as
compared to Japan's?
J - Me and my big mouth.
D - (glanced at Julita while photocopying some documents)

●Useful & Humorous expression



★canny

賢く注意深い、簡単にだまされない、よく状況がわかっているような人を
指す言葉。特にビジネスや政治の世界でよく使われます。


Ex. She's quite canny especially when it comes to incentives.
彼女は特にインセンティブのことになるとかなり注意深い。



★co-emcee

emcee はセレモニーやテレビ、ラジオの番組などでパフォーマーを紹介す
るなど全体を取り仕切る人。司会者。
頭にco-をつけると同等、もしくは若干責任が軽い同じ役割の人を表します。
ex.co-worker.

Ex. The co-emcee opened the envelope and announced the best film
　　 awardee.
そのサブ司会者は封筒を開けてベスト映画賞を発表した。



★allocation

割当て、配当、配置など人や組織に割当てられる何かの量、割合などを表
すことば。
allocate でお金や時間の特定の量を正式に決定するという事。

Ex. I work as a Chief Supervisor in the Budget and Allocations
Department.
　　 私は予算管理部の筆頭係長として働いています。



★me and my big mouth

なにか秘密やいってはいけない事を他の人に言ってしまったり言おうと悩ん
でいる時になどに言うことば。
このダイアログでは、「余計な事言っちゃったな」と言うようなニュアンス。


Ex. Why is Ellen absent?
Because she has to go skiing with her friends. Oops! Me and
my big mouth.
　　 エレンはどうしてお休みなの？
　　 だって友達とスキーに行かなくちゃならないんだもん。あっいけない。
　　 余計な事言っちゃった。


◆「しっかりしている」

オフィスでウィリビーがジュリータに近づいてくる



W:ジュリータ、ゲームの参加者や表彰される人、司会者達の代替の人数が
　できました。目を通して承認してもらえますか。
J:（総人数を見て）ウーン、だいたい今の生徒さんたちの３分の１がパー
　ティに出席するのね。かなりの割合ね。
W:実は、これをあなたに見てもらったもうひとつの理由は、お土産や賞品
　なんかの予算を聞きたいからなの。
J:あらやだ、またその話か。予算配分しなくちゃ。えーっと、もし私たち
がこのイベントを本当に盛大で特別なものにしたいのなら、お土産なん
かもそうしなくちゃいけないわよね、そうでしょ。
（ウィリビーがうなづく）
　そうしたら、ユニークで役に立って印象的なものじゃなくちゃね、でも
　倹約もしなくっちゃ。
W:ねえ、そんな事言うくらいかなりしっかりしているみたいだから言うけ
ど、里帰りの時に注文して買ったら。日本と比べたらもっと安く特注品
　が頼めるじゃない。
J:余計な事言っちゃったな。
W:（書類をコピーしながらジュリータを見て）
私にも何冊か本を買って来てくれます？

E: Hey, Naoko! What happened to you last week?
N: I'm sorry I had to skip the lesson on short notice.
Actually, I called in sick that day and went to the
doctor.
K: (Looking concerned) Why? Are you all right?
N: I have been feeling some pain on my back lately but
I simply ignore it.
E: Oh no! I hope it's nothing serious.
K: There are two possible factors I know causing severe
backache - kidney stones and slip disks.
N: I don't know yet, but it's more likely to be the
latter.
K: I once had some back pains, too, and it turned out
to be caused by the former. Have you had some tests?
N: Simple ones, but not enough to be conclusive. I am
scheduled to undergo MRI next week. To be honest,
I'm a little apprehensive about it.
K: MRI? Take it from me, you have nothing to be worried
about it. I experienced it once, several years ago.
E: Same here.
N: Huh? (a little surprised)
K: As I said, I had kidney stones. After the scan, my
doctor and I discussed treatments.
E: Did you have surgery?
K: No, I opted for the non-invasive means.
E: Good for you, you had that option. I underwent
surgery for an oversized benign tumor.
K: The good thing is, we're now the picture of health!
I bet you would be, too, Naoko.
E: Right. Surely there's immediate remedy to your pain.
N: Thanks for lifting my spirit, guys.
