The ladies in DCEC are having a make-up tutorial session.

1. What was Julita's and Kuri's short talk about?

Characters: K - Kuri; J - Julita; B - Blessed

～Julita gives Kuri some fashion tips.

J: Kuri, can we have a short talk?
K: Sure, what about?
J: Well, you don’t need to bring your note and pen.
It’s just a casual one, more on girl talk.
K: Sounds interesting.
(Blessed enters)
B: Hey! What’s the fuss?
J: Would you like to join us? It won’t take much time, in a
jiffy, perhaps.
(to Kuri)
I’ve noticed that your make-up somehow needs a little
brushing-up, especially your blusher.
How do you apply it?
K: Well, I just brush it on my face. I’m not scrupulous and
besides, are there any rules?
J: Oui. You should match it on the shape of your face and
contrast it to the shade of your lipstick and eye shadow.
Like now, you’re wearing dark-plum on your lips and eyes.
Then, you should put coral　on your cheeks.
I’ve one now.
Stay put. (applies blusher to Kuri)
B: It matches you, Kuri. Talk about ingenuity!
K: (looking at herself in a mirror) Hmm, impressive.
Somehow I feel like a full woman wearing good make-up.
J: As the saying goes, “a little of everything makes a woman
perfect”.
B: Julita, do you still have time? (making a me-too smile)






●Useful and humorous expressions

★girl talk
　女の子の話、他にguy talk, baby talkなどと言う言い方もある。
E.g. They were having a girl talk when Mr.Shima arrived.


★in a jiffy,
すぐに（a moment, soon)
　E.g. I'll be with you in a jiffy.


★Talk about ingenuity!
Talk about ～で、「それは～だね」と～を強調する表現
　E.g. I know I'm beautiful, that's why I have my pictures all over
my room.
Talk about vanity.

★a little of everything makes a woman perfect.
神は細部に宿るなどとも言いますが、ほんの小さな気使いを忘れない
ことが大きな差となって現れます。美人は努力してるのよ。
E.g. In DCEC, a little of everything makes learners
comfortable.






◆「完璧な女性」

登場人物：K-クリ、J－ジュリータ、B－ブレセッド

～ジュリータがクリにファッションのヒントを教えている

J　：　クリ、ちょっと時間ある？
K　：　ええ、なんですか？
J　：　ペンとノートは持ってこなくていいわ。かしこまった話じゃなく
て、まあ「女の子の話」だから。
K　：　何かおもしろそうですね。
　　　（ブレセッドが入ってくる）
B　：　ねえ、なんかおもしろそうね。
J　：　参加する？そんなにかからないわ。多分ちょっとだけ。
　　　　（クリに）
　　 　あなたのメークもう少しおしゃれにしたほうがいいわ。特にチー
ク。どうやってるの。
K　：　えーっと、ただ顔につけているだけ。あんまり気にしてないけど
なにかルールがあるんですか？
J　：　もちろん！顔の形に合わせて、口紅やアイシャドーとのコントラ
　　　 ストも考えてね。今、暗紫色の口紅とシャドーをつけているから
　　　 チークはコーラルピンクをつけたほうがいいわ。私持っているか
　　　 らつけてみよう。動かないで。（ブラシをクリにあてる）
B　：　クリ似合うじゃない。ほんと器用ね。
K　： （鏡を見て）へー、なんかすごい。私きちんとメークしたレディ
　　　 みたい。
J　：　よく言うでしょ。「小さな気配りが完璧な女性を作る」って。
B　：　ねージュリータ。まだ時間ある？(私も、と笑顔で）

During Free Chat...

F : Hola!
K : Hola? Is that Spanish?
M : It means hello in Spanish, Kai. Oh, nice scarf you got
there, Felicity.
F : Thanks, Miho! This is actually for our activity for the
month of July.
M : Yeah, I read about it in the newsletter. Bullfighting
festival, right?
F : You hit the nail right on the head. This month we are 　　
celebrating, San Fermines.
It is a bullfighting festival and a red-letter day in
the city of Pamplona...
M : (interrupts) One of the grandest festivals in Spain.
F : I see you have your nose in the books, Miho.
I'm impressed.
K : So the red scarf is to enrage the bull?
F : Contrary to popular belief, the matador's cape is red
not because bulls hate the color. Truth be told, bulls
are colorblind.
M : You mean, they cannot distinguish red from green?
F : Nope.
K : Got it. Then, why do bullfighters carry a red cape?
F : It's traditional, really.

M：　カイ、それはスペイン語でこんにちはって意味よ。
　　 あら、フェリシティー、そのスカーフ素敵ね。
F：　ありがとう、ミホ！実は7月のアクティビティーのために身に
つけてるのよ。
M：　ああ、ニュースレターで読んだわ。闘牛祭でしょ？
F：　その通り。今月はサン・フェルミン祭をお祝いしているの。
闘牛祭とパンプローナの街のおめでたい日で...
M： （話をさえぎって）スペインの最大祭りの一つでしょ。
F：　ミホは読書に余念がないようね、関心したわ。
K：　じゃ、赤いスカーフは牛を怒らせるためなの？
F： 世間で思われているのと違うんだけど、闘牛士のマントが赤
なのは牛がその色を嫌いだからってわけじゃないのよ。
　　 本当のところ、牛は色覚異常なの。
M：　牛は赤と緑の区別がつかないってこと？
F：　そう。
K：　なるほどね。じゃあ、何で闘牛士は赤いマントを持ってるんだろ。
M：　昔ながらのものなのよ。

having lunch.

1. Was Julita satisfied with their lunch?

"The Perfect Excuse"

Characters: J - Julita; M - Marie; S - Shima

～After their lunch break, Julita offers chocolates to
Marie and Mr. Shima.

J: I'm so stuffed with the sushi we ate.
S: So am I.
M: Well, I am too, with the buckwheat noodles I bought.
J: I think something sweet sounds good. Who's with me?
M: I am.
J: That's good. I brought some chocolates from my apartment.
(Taking three boxes from the fridge)
Here they are. Chocolates with chestnuts, milk and plain.
They're already opened because I nibbled at some yesterday.
M: Yummy. I'll taste each kind.
S: I'll have some, too. Julita, I noticed you're quite fond
of chocolates.
J: A little. I like Japanese chocolates in particular because
the balance of bitterness and sweetness is extraordinary.
M: Somehow I agree with you.
J: Besides, research says that sweets help alleviate stress.
And, as a working woman, sometimes I feel stressful, so I
usually keep a handful of chocolates in the fridge.
M: Or, is it because you don't want to go out often and buy?
J: Well, that too.




●Useful and humorous expressions

★I'm so stuffed with
stuff で詰め込むという意味で口頭では「たらふく食べる」という意味
があります。ちょっとインフォーマルな言い方なので改まった席では使
わない様にしてください。
また"stuffed toy"と言えば「ぬいぐるみ」のことですね。
E.g. The boy sat at the table stuffing himself.
（その少年はテーブルに座ってむさぼり食った。）

★chestnuts
栗。日本では栗というとマロンというイメージがありますがmarronは実
はフランス語です。英語ではchestnutsといいます。
E.g. This is my first time to see chestnuts in a forest.
（林で栗を見るのは初めてです。）

★I nibbled at some
nibbleでちょっと食べるというような意味です。
E.g. We sat drinking wine and nibbling at some pieces of cheese.
(私たちは座ってワインを飲みながらチーズをつまんでいた。）

★Yummy.
おいしいという時のインフォーマルな言い方。
他にはdelicious等を使いますね。
E.g. What a yummy cake this is!
（なんておいしいケーキなの。）


◆「完璧な言い訳」

登場人物：J - ジュリーター;M - マリー; S - 島

～昼休みのあと、ジュリータがマリーと島にチョコレートをあげる


J：食べたお寿司でもうおなかがいっぱい。
S：僕もだ。
M：ええ私もおそばでおなかがいっぱい。
J：なにか甘いものがデザートに欲しいわね。賛成の人？
M：はーい。
J：よかった。家からチョコレートを持ってきたから。（冷蔵庫から3箱取り
出す。）どうぞ。クリのチョコとミルクとプレーン。きのうちょっとつま
　 んだからもうあいてるの。
M: おいしい。それぞれみんな食べるわ。
S: 僕ももらうよ。ジュリータ。ほんとにチョコレート好きだな。
J: ちょっとね。特に苦味と甘さのバランスが最高だから日本のチョコレート
は特に好き。
M: 私もそんな感じかな。
J: それとある研究によると甘いものはストレスを緩和する助けになるんだっ
て。働く女性として時々ストレスをすごく感じるからいつも手にいっぱい
のチョコレートを冷蔵庫に用意してるの。
M: でもそれってしょっちゅう買いに行くのが面倒だからじゃないの？
J: まあそれもあるけどね。
