Hello everyone on Ameblo! Today, I would like to talk about Puccini's opera ``Tosca,'' which explores human love and hate. This opera is one of my favorite works and I have gone to see it many times. Not only the music but also the story is very moving and draws you into the emotions of the characters. I highly recommend this work to anyone who is interested in opera or who has yet to see it.
"Tosca" is an opera premiered in 1900 by Italian composer Puccini, sung in Italian. The performance is approximately 2 hours long with 3 acts. This masterpiece is set in Rome at the end of the 19th century and depicts the struggle between love and power. The main characters, the singer Tosca and the painter Cavaradossi, come to the attention of the notorious police chief Scarpia by harboring fugitives who collaborate with Napoleon's army. Scarpia becomes obsessed with Tosca and tortures Cavaradossi in order to make her his. Tosca accepts her deal with Scarpia to save her loved ones, but it was the beginning of a tragedy that changed her fate.
There are many things to see and hear about this opera, but I particularly like the following four.
・Tosca's aria "Vissi d'arte"
This aria is sung in the second act when Tosca is threatened by Scarpia. Tosca reflects on her life and sings, "I lived for art." As she prays to God, she asks why she has to suffer like this. This aria deeply expresses Tosca's feelings and brings tears to her listeners.
・Cavaradossi's aria "E lucevan le stelle"
