Last night 12 members of C&I gathered to have our monthly English Discussion Session.

The goal of the discussion sessions is to get enough skill to pass the 通訳ガイド試験.

Last night's theme was explaining Japanese public holidays and festivals.

Some of the difficult words that came up were:

prosperity: 繁栄
auspicious: 縁起のいい
equinox: 昼夜平分時
aesthetic: 美の
ephemeral: つかの間の, はかない
longevity: 長生き
gimmick: 工夫, 仕掛け
gung ho: 非常に熱心な, 熱烈な

Some of the definitions we settled on were:

お年玉: Money people give to children at New Year's

駅伝: A long-distance relay race run by university students at New Year's
