What is Linux?

Linux is an operating system. An operating system is the software on your computer which operates the hardware and makes it possible to run applications. Other operating systems are Windows, MAC OS, and UNIX.

Linux is software. Software is computer programs written by people which give instructions to the computer's CPU to do things. An operating system is made up of many computer programs which are necessary for the computer to run.

Linux is open source. Open source is a way of making software. Rather than keeping the software programs private or secret, anyone can see the programs and change them. People all over the world participate in making open source software. Because so many people find problems (bugs) in the programs and correct them, open source software is high quality.

Linux is a popular operating system for running servers. Because Linux is stable and open source, many of the world's popular servers run on Linux - from the Apache web server to the Postfix e-mail server to the Samba file sharing server. These servers are used a lot in business.

Linux can run many kinds of computers. It is the basis of the Android smartphone and is also used in embedded systems and supercomputers. This is another reason why it is popular.
