A server is a computer which offers services to other computers and their users. Servers are very important to computer networks. In fact, without servers, computers probably wouldn't be much fun!

There are many kinds of servers, offering many kinds of services. The following are a few kinds of servers.

Web Server
A web server offers web pages and web applications. Whenever you open your web browser and surf the web, you are accessing web servers! Web servers provide the content you see in your browser. They also provide applications which allow you to make a user account and upload content to web sites such as Facebook and YouTube.

E-mail Server
An e-mail server offers the sending and retrieving of e-mails. Whenever you send or retrieve an e-mail, you are using e-mail servers!

File Sharing Server
A file sharing server offers disk space for many users on different computers to share files. File sharing servers allow members of a project to communicate effectively.

As a point of interest, the word "server" is ambiguous.

Consider this sentence:
"The server is in this room."

In this case the server is a physical computer.

Now consider this sentence.
"I will install the server."

In this case the server is software (a computer program).

What is the connection between servers and Linux?

Many companies need their servers to run all day and all night. A Linux machine can run for months and months with no problems and so the Linux operating system is a very popular choice for running servers.
