Ｈ・Ｐ・ウィルモット『大いなる聖戦・第二次世界大戦全史』訳出過程の誤訳検証、その⑫。今回も、見出しの事例である。
前回と異なり、今回は少し厄介なケースである。
Faltering R.A.F.-A.A.F. Offensives
という見出し。
何のことやらさっぱり分からないであろうから、順次説明する。
まず、R.A.F.はRoyal Air Forceの略で英国空軍を指す。A.A.F.は、当初U.S.A.A.F.として記述されたもので、U.S. Army Air Force、つまり米国陸軍航空隊であり、第二次大戦中にヨーロッパでの対独戦略爆撃の主力となったものである。
Offensivesは、offensiveの複数形で、普通「攻勢」といった訳にされることが多い。
即ち、英国空軍と米国陸軍航空隊による攻勢である。そして、その攻勢の対象は、前回の話の流れから推測できるであろうが、ドイツである。
そして、その攻勢がfalteringといった様相を呈していたという文脈である。
このfalterという動詞の現在分詞形を如何に訳すかが大きな問題である。そこで、この見出しが包摂する部分の中から、いくつかキーとなる文章を抜粋して如何に提示する：
. . . the American and British bomber forces conducted their separate wars even as common problems emerged to frustrate their different efforts.
Compounding this problem for the Americans and British was the reality that neither had the strength to mount sustained operations that could inflict telling cumulative damage, while bad weather, over Britain or Germany, imposed its own restrictions upon the conduct of operations. Moreover, both the Americans and British were prevented from mounting successive follow-up attacks because of the need to switch targets in order to preserve tactical surprise.
