Karin’s Travel Report

(July 2018 - USA)

I had the fortunate opportunity to visit the United States for a couple of weeks to reconnect with friends and to revisit some of my favorite places there.  Nate, my fiancé, and I decided to take a road trip from the Northeast to the Midwest with the goal of visiting four key cities: Boston (MA), Ithaca (NY), Oberlin (OH), and Oregon (IL).  After many cups of coffee and much driving (total: 17 hours!), we successfully made it from Boston to Oregon!  Thank you to Nate for driving the entire way, and for all of you who made this trip possible for me!

My adventure began in Boston, where Nate picked me up in his rental car.  We stayed in Boston for a night, and in that time we visited our favorite restaurants before embarking on our 5 hour journey to Ithaca, NY.  After 5 hours of driving through the rolling greens of Pennsylvania and New York, we finally arrived in Ithaca, Nate’s new home.  Ithaca is known for their coffee, so I bought several bags as souvenirs.  We stayed in Ithaca for about 4 days total, before we continued to drive to Oberlin, OH.

The drive to Oberlin was another 6 hours.  Oberlin is a special place for both Nate and me because it is the town of our alma mater, Oberlin College.  The weather there was very nice, and we had a great time catching up with friends and walking through familiar neighborhoods. On our way out, we stopped by the school bookstore to pick up some school buttons for the students at BLAST as souvenirs.

Our next stop was Oregon, IL, the town which camp was located.  Nate and I attended Camp Emmaus, a Christian camp, and spent a week interacting with high school students.  There was a lot of nature at camp, so it was a wonderful place to relax and unplug. Each day consisted of many activities, including singing sessions, workshops, and swimming. It was an experience I will never forget. I would like to continue teaching English to children in Japan with the hopes of one day, taking Japanese students to the states and experience camp themselves.
