I crossed the river in Tokushima many times, walking up and down its banks chasing an anime stamp collection. You see, there was a cafe running a stamp rally for different Aniplex series on the days I visited. I managed to get my final stamps just in time, so afterward, I visited a small souvenir shop on the way to the dance festival. This is where I picked this up.
Its light and elegant wrapping caught my eye. Feeling victorious from my stamp rally achievement, I sat on a bench by the banks of the river and unwrapped the package. There were two pieces inside. I opened the beautiful cover paper with the artistic calligraphy and was greeted with a mound of tinted white.
It was smooth and lightly chewy. The outside had a classic mochi taste, but then, to my surprise, I bit into a sweet melt of gentle sweetness. I could instantly recognize the taste of white beans. The ingredients mentioned yuzu peel and sweet potato, but I didn't taste them strongly—perhaps the yuzu was just a subtle, refreshing aroma. It tasted fresh, like it had been prepared just that morning. The aftertaste was pleasant enough, without any lingering sweetness or bitterness.
I later found out this is made by Ok aman Honpo, a historic shop founded in 1902. It is called Katsura Fuji Mochi—a traditional sweet loved in Tokushima for over a century, flavored with local yuzu.
It was the perfect way to celebrate finishing the stamp rally.
