神戸出身の方っていますか？外国人の中では、神戸の人はとてもおしゃれだと聞きます。それが噂なのかどうかはわかりませんが。それなら、お菓子の好みにもそのセンスが表れているのかな、とずっと気になっていました。
そんなある8月の雨の夜、私は神戸のメインストリートをぶらぶら歩いていて、雨宿りのために土産物店に入りました（傘を持ち歩くのが面倒で、どうせ最後には忘れてしまうんです）。そこで目に留まったのがこの箱。長方形の深い赤色で、神戸の観光名所の絵が描かれています。「これはいいお土産になるぞ」と思いました。開けるとき、神戸ポートタワー、北野異人館、そして港の桟橋が目に浮かぶはずです。
家に帰って1か月後、私は箱の紙カバーをそっと開けました。本当に神戸の風景が目の前に広がりました。中にはもう一つの箱があり、「Petites Gaufres」と書いてあります。私はフランス語も話すので、これは小さなワッフルだなとすぐにわかりました！
私は1つのパックを取り出して、慎重に開けました。何しろ、ボロボロと崩れてほしくありませんでしたから。1つのパックに3枚のワッフルが入っていました。箱の中には4パック入っていました。薄い黄金色で、まるで「Gaufre」という文字を形作った彫刻のよう…あるいはスーパーマリオの大きなコインのようでもありました。本当に薄いんです。大きくて平たい！大きくて、薄い。では一口…

噛んだときに崩れませんでした。クランチ感がちょうどいい、もしクランチ感メーターがあったら、の話ですが。中のフィリングは主張しすぎず、薄くて柔らかい。バニラかな？チョコレートかな？よくわからないので、原材料を確認しないといけませんね。焼きたてのように新鮮で、後味もすっきりしていました。では、残りの2枚も…ごくん。
原材料には、バニラやココアなどが記載されています。他の袋はイチゴとチョコレートだそうです。ああ、人生のいいもの全部、ですよね？

Are you from Kobe? I hear Kobe's people are very stylish. Or that is the rumour among foreigners. I always wondered if such style was reflected in their taste in confectionery.
So, on a rainy evening in August I wander the main streets of Kobe and enter a souvenir shop to avoid getting wet (I was too lazy to carry an umbrella that I would eventually forget). This box catches my eye. Long, deep red, with pictures of Kobe's sightseeing spots. "That will be a great souvenir," I thought. As I open it, I will remember Kobe Port Tower, the Kitano Ijinkan, and the city's waterfront pier.
After a month, having returned home, I carefully open the box's paper cover. Pictures of Kobe flash before me indeed. Inside, another box saying Petites Gaufres. Well, I also speak French, and I knew exactly these were small waffles!
I took one packet out and opened it carefully. After all, I did not want it to crumble all over in pieces. Each packet had 3 waffles inside. There were 4 packs inside the box. They were a light golden brown colour and they were almost like a sculpture spelling Gaufre... or like a large coin from a Super Mario game. Really thin. They were large and flat! Large but thin. Let me take a bite...

They were crunchy but did not fall apart on my bite. Just the right crunchiness, if there was a crunchiness meter. The filler was not overpowering. It was thin and soft. I could taste vanilla, perhaps? Or chocolate? I am not sure, so I will have to check the ingredients. It tasted so fresh, as if it just came out of the bakery. And it left such a clean finish. So, the other two... down the hatch they go...
The ingredients mention, among others, vanilla and cocoa. It also says that the other bags will be strawberry and chocolate. Aaah, all the good things in life — do you agree?
The manufacturer was Kobe Fugetsudo Co. in Kobe City, of course.
I would recommend giving them a visit, and I am buying them again if I see them.
