1979年3月28日、米国のスリーマイル島の原子力発電所が原子炉冷却材喪失事故を起こしました。今月の東北太平洋沖地震での福島第一原子力発電所の事故が起こる前まではチェルノブイリに次ぐ2番目に重大な原発事故として知られていた、世界で最初の放射能漏れ大事故でした。
これを機に米国では反核・反原子力運動が盛り上がりましましたが、そのきっかけとなったと言えるのが1979年9月19日から23日にかけてニューヨークのマジソン・スクエア・ガーデンにて行われた「ノー・ニュークス・コンサート」です。ここにはブルース・スプリングスティーン、ジャクソン・ブラウン、ジェームス・テーラー、カーリー・サイモン、クロスビー・スティルス＆ナッシュを始めとする当時の多くの著名なミュージシャンが参加しました。
このコンサートを大勢のアメリカ人が鑑賞しただけでなく、このスーパースターたちの名演が収められたライブ・アルバムには原子力発電について詳しく解説したブックレットが添付され、アルバムを購入した多くの人々を啓蒙するに至ったのです。
NO NUKES PICTURES ノーニュークス コンサートそのコンサートでドゥービー・ブラザーズ、ジェームス・テーラーと共にジョン・ホールが歌った彼の曲、「パワー」が静かながら力強いメッセージソングとして存在感がありました。パワーとは力と同時に電力も表します。
歌詞では太陽光や風力といったいくつかの代替エネルギーを提案していますが、日本こそこれらの方面で最も優れた技術を擁している国だと思います。一日も早く原子力の呪縛から逃れる日が来ることを祈りながらこの曲をご紹介します。
