Super Rugby Review: Melbourne Rebels

With the Super Rugby quarter-finalists now decided we take a look at those teams who missed out. First up, the Rebels.

The 2017 Super Rugby season will be one which the Rebels will want to forget in a hurry as they finished the regular season campaign right at the bottom of the tournament's overall standings – their worst performance since the club's inaugural Super Rugby season in 2011.

They managed just one victory but despite that woeful record, there were some individuals who played consistently well throughout their campaign, most notably Reece Hodge, Amanaki Mafi and Marika Koroibete.

There was lots of uncertainty in the Rebels' ranks after the Australian Rugby Union revealed in April that they will axe either the Melbourne franchise or the Western Force from the new Super Rugby competition in 2018.

This, after SANZAAR confirmed that three teams – two from South Africa and one from Australia – would be removed from the tournament to bring it back down to 15 from 2018.

The Rebels also lost several players like Sean McMahon, captain Nic Stirzaker, Jordy Reid and Sefa Naivalu to injury this year with McMahon's absence a huge setback in the bigger scheme of things as he missed a large chunk of the campaign and eventually played in just four matches.

The Rebels' campaign started poorly and after suffering a 56-18 defeat to the Blues in the tourament opener in Melbourne things went from bad to worse in their next fixture against the Hurricanes in Wellington, with the 2016 champions claiming a convincing 71-6 victory.

That was a sign of things to come and further losses to the Chiefs, Waratahs and Highlanders followed, before they eventually ended their losing streak with a hard-fought 19-17 win over eventual Australian Conference winners the Brumbies in Round 8.

The next weekend they headed to Durban where they drew 9-9 with the Sharks but that would be the closest they came to notching another victory as defeats followed to the Kings, Lions, Reds, Waratahs, Crusaders, Brumbies, Force and Jaguares.

Their 32-29 loss to the Jaguares in their final match of the campaign and a 29-24 defeat to the Reds were the only matches from those run of results which they secured bonus points.

With a cloud still hanging over the Rebels' participation in next year's competition, there is also uncertainty in their coaching ranks after their long-standing head coach Tony McGahan revealed during June that he would part ways with the club at the conclusion of the 2017 Super Rugby season.

The Rebels have also said goodbye to Mitch Inman, Jonah Placid, Jack Debreczeni, Ben Meehan and Toby Smith who are all heading for greener pastures abroad. Few can blame them considering the cloud of uncertainty that continues to hover over AAMI Park.

Best player: Although the Rebels struggled throughout the season, there were some individuals who caught the eye and none more so than dynamic back-row Amanaki Mafi. The Japan international was in his debut season at Super Rugby level after joining the Rebels from Bath but took like the proverbial duck to water and caught the eye with numerous barnstorming performances throughout the campaign. Mafi was particularly impressive with ball in hand and was amongst the top performers in several attacking statistics for the tournament in 2017. The 27-year-old finished second highest for carries (196), ninth for metres gained (990) and eighth for offloads (24). He also finished fifth highest for tackles made (145) and will on several clubs' shopping lists if the Rebels drop out out of Super Rugby.
