「和」とは日本人が大好きな言葉の一つです。日本列島の厳しい自然環境と稲作を中心とした生活様式が、「和の心」を育みました。日本人にとって、個人主義よりも集団主義がより重要です。和の心とは、集団における秩序や調和また礼儀を重んじます。また、決して争わずに、相手の意思を読み取り、調和を保つという日本人の美徳のひとつです。古くは十七条憲法において、「一曰 以和爲貴」とあるように、道徳的規範として「二曰 篤敬三寶（仏法僧）」「三曰 承詔必謹（天皇の詔）」より重要視されてきました。2011年に起きた東日本大震災の時でも、混乱状態でも、列を乱さず、助け合い、お互いを信頼し合うという日本人の尊敬すべき行動は、世界各国から賞賛されました。このような態度は日本文化において「和のこころ」から来ていると思います。
“和, Wa ( which means peace or harmony )” is one of the Japanese favorite words. The strict natural environment of the Japanese islands and rice-farming centered life-style made the Japanese spirit of harmony. For Japanese, collectivism is more important than individualism. Japanese spirit, “Wa” values order, harmony and courtesy. Also, it is one of the Japanese virtues not to fight, read each other’s thoughts and synchronize with each other person. As it is written “Harmony is to be valued, and the avoidance of wanton opposition to be honoured.” in the Seventeen-article constitution, harmony comes over Buddhism and Imperial commands. When the Great East Japanese Earthquake happened in the year 2011, Japanese people’s respectful behavior was praised all over the world, even in chaos, they waited in line, helped each other and trusted each other. I believed this attitude comes from the concept of Wa in Japanese culture.
