NHKの『実践ビジネス英語』 Middle-Class Squeeze（中流階級の苦境）の続きです。

■ Here's a surprising bit of data for you to chew on.
「chew on：～をじっくり考える」という意味で、considerや ponderと同じ意味です。chewと言えば、お馴染のchewing gumもありますね。
■ live from one paycheck to the next
「その日暮らしをする」という意味です。paycheckは給料小切手。米国では給料を小切手で支払う慣習があります。 live from paycheck to paycheckという言い回しもあります。
■ It's not a pretty picture.
「きれいでない絵」＝「深刻な事態」という意味です。放送では、use this when something is very bad or unpleasantという説明がなされていました。 not a pretty sightという言い回しも可能、という説明もされていました。
■ Americans are feeling increasingly insecure.
非常に便利な表現で、something is continuing to rise, grow, expandという状況で使えるという説明がありました。放送中、次のような例文が挙げられていました。
Customers are increasingly drawn to eco-friendly products lately.
■ be stressed out
「ストレスで疲れ果ている」の意味で、under a lot of stressという説明がされていました。
■ telling statistic
「多くを語る（意味のある）統計値」ということで、reveals a great deal about some situationという説明がされていました。 telling surveyという用語も使えそうです。意味のある統計値というと、「meaningful statistic(s)」などといった表現を使いたくなりますが、tellingの方が自然な感じがします。なお、やや専門的ですが、統計では「significance：有意」という用語も頻繁に使われます。
今回のビニェットも比較的簡単でした。
