ケントさん、アーミッシュのコミュニティで起きた事件を伝えてくれました。
家にアーミッシュの一団が大工仕事に来る際には一つだけ携帯電話を持ってきます。その電話は、いつも使用中です。
皆が次々と違う村にいる仲間に電話するからです。
２０２３年１０月４日、国家緊急アラートのテストが携帯で初めて行われました。
そのテストは全ての携帯から大きなサイレンの音が鳴り、その後に録音されたメッセージが流れるものです、今回は”テスト”とだけ流れました。
私達の全ての携帯が数秒の間、叫びだしました。
納屋、弁当箱、パンのケース、下着の中、パン入れの後ろなどに隠していたアーミッシュたちの携帯からもサイレンが鳴りだしました。
この警報は、サイレントモードでも鳴ります。
携帯を持たないアーミッシュは持っていたアーミッシュに嫉妬し、携帯の持ち主を地域の司教に報告しました。
司教は怒り、携帯を持っていた者に２週間の"shunning"（会話、外出と礼拝、会食の禁止と教会で皆の前での懴悔）を科しました。
これはアーミッシュで大きな事件となり、 アーミッシュが仕事に来なくなったので私にも大事でした。
現代的なアーミッシュの人たちは携帯を使いますが、使うのは、運転手を呼ぶ時か仕事の時に限られます。
ケントさん、アーミッシュと商売するので、この事件を知ったのでしょう。
私も昔、メノナイト（アーミッシュとほぼ同じ）の同僚が居ましたが、両親も車に乗るほど現代的で、彼も穀物会社から証券会社に転職していました。
アーミッシュも色々です。
When the Amish come here to work on carpentry projects they have 1 cell phone that stays busy all day when the workers pass the phone around to call their brethren in different communities. October 4 2023 the US had their first ever national cell phone test of the national emergency phone notification system. The test was that all cell phones made a loud siren followed by a text or recording of what the national emergency was (in this case it just said "test". All of our phones screeched for a few seconds. Amish who had phones hidden in barns, lunchboxes, undergarments, behind the bread box, etc got the same alert. The siren sounded even if the phone was in silent mode. Any Amish who did not have a phone - was jealous of those who did and reported the phone owners to the local Bishop. The Bishops were not amused and punished those who had phones by shunning them for 2 weeks. Shunning = they cannot speak / visit/ go to church . eat with other Amish & must repent in front of the church congregation.
This was kind of a big deal among the Amish & English like the Locks because Amish work crews were disrupted.
Some modern Amish do allow cell phones like those that work here but can only use it to call their driver or for business.
