先週は涼しく雨も降って作物にとって最高の天気でした。
私達の畑での雨量は31ミリから62ミリでした。ここから北や西の地域では200ミリもの雨が降った所があり川の水位が上昇していますが洪水警戒水位を超えることはなさそうです。
今週は三十二度以上の日が続き雨がなさそうなので雨が再び必要になりそうです。
作物は順調に育っていて、とうもろこしの背は2.1メートルから2.4メートルになり雄花が出始めそうです。大豆は膝の高さになり開花時期を迎えました。
種まきがおくれた畑も追い付きつつあります。
先週の農務省報告のせいで相場は何日か上がりました。シカゴ穀物相場の12月限月で指値しておいた幾つかが売れました。
いつもの年だと今の時期までには収穫量の3割は売っているのですが、今年は少々遅れ気味です。
このまま価格が上がってくれれば3ドル70セント以上で指値しておいた分も売れるでしょう。
驚いたのは、甥から先週火曜日に来た電話です。
彼は土曜日に義理の妹の引越しを手伝ったのですが、日曜の夜から発熱し、月曜の朝には40度の熱を出しました。
月曜に新型コロナウイルスの検査を受け、火曜に陽性であることがわかりました。
その為、引っ越しに関わった人は全て自宅待機となっています。
今のところ、他には具合が悪い人は出ていませんが、私も妻のローリーも検査を受け、明日には結果が出る予定です。
今週後半はグロウマーク農協の三日間の会議に出るはずでしたが、大事を取ってズームを使ったオンライン会議に切り替えました。

A cool and wet week for us which was just what the doctor ordered! Rains
were variable and we ended up with 1.25"to 2.5" on land we farm. Areas to
our north and west received up to 8 inches and the river is again on the
rise but looks like it will stay under flood stage. It sounds like we will
need the moisture as this week is forecast to be hot and mostly dry with
daytime highs in the 90's every day. Crops are growing well with corn 7'-8'
tall and ready to tassel while most beans are approaching knee high and full
of blooms. A few late planted fields are smaller but catching up quickly.
The USDA report this week was a surprise and the market had a couple of good
days. We had some offers in for December corn that hit, we usually have
about 30% of our anticipated crop sold by now but this year we are behind.
Hopefully the market will move higher the next week or two, which it usually
does and we can make more sales in the $3.70 or better range.
Another surprise this week was a call on Tuesday from a nephew who helped on
one of my sister-in-law's move from Springfield to Rushville last Saturday.
He told us he started feeling ill Sunday evening and had a 102 temperature
by Monday at 4am. He got tested for Covid Monday and received a positive
result on Tuesday. So this week everyone involved in the move has been kind
of self-quarantining, no one else has felt ill and several including Lori
and I have been tested (we should have our results tomorrow). I was
planning to attend a three day GROWMARK meeting later this week but have
decided to use Zoom instead and not take any chances.
Pictures this week are of beans with blooms, volunteer corn in a field which
we and others have more of than usual this year, corn that is tasseling and
silking and brace roots.
