中西部では、先週（５月8日の週）は記録的な暑さに見舞われ、今週も続くとの予報です。 私たちの地域で雨は殆ど降りませんでしたが、北では降ったようです。 来週は毎日、雨が降りそうです。
イリノイ川の水位は平常に保たれていて、5月としては珍しいですが、アイオワ州北部とミネソタ州、ウィスコンシン州で大雨が続いているせいで、セントルイス以北のミシシッピー河では洪水水位を超えています。
種蒔きの進捗を好感して、今週の穀物相場は下がりました。私の予測では、次の上げの機会は受粉期に入る6月後半から7月前半だと思います。
ライアンとチャドは月曜日に植え終わった大豆畑を見回っています。トウモロコシの発芽はほぼ完璧ですが、丘陵の白っぽい土の畑では大豆の発芽に問題が出ています。ライアンは来週まで発芽の様子を見て、エーカーあたりの発芽が8万に満たない畑には、種蒔きの密度を半分にして植えなおすつもりです。因みに私たちは、エーカー当り14,200粒のレートで種まきしました。種まきをやり直しするのはせいぜい100エーカー以下だと良いのですが。
ダイズハムシが大豆の新芽を食べていますが、薬剤を蒔くほどではありません。(チェットさんの農場では、センチュリーコーンを作っていません)
来週の予定は、天気と種まきの やり直しの状況次第ですが、秋に硫安を撒いておいた500エーカーのとうもろこし畑に窒素肥料をサイドドレスし、（秋に撒く肥料を少なくし、春に作物脇に直接肥料を散布する事により、効率良く肥料を与えられる）種蒔き後3週目に行う大豆畑の除草剤散布の準備、それと土木工事です。
今週の写真は、カバークロップのライ麦畑に植えた大豆、Stale seedbedと呼ばれる雑草処理を秋にした畑に植えた大豆、しっかりと芽が出たとうもろこし畑、畑が緑色になっているのが分ると思います。

今週、21日の週は、週末までは熱く乾いた天気の予報。
5月20日段階でのとうもろこしの種蒔き状況は主要18州平均で81％が終了し平年並みです。 イリノイは96％終了、遅れているのはミシガン州の50％、サウスダコタ州の66％などです。
とうもろこしの発芽状況は18州平均で50％と平年より良い位です。

Near record heat this past week for us here in the mid-west with more forecast for next week. We only received a trace of precipitation with areas to our north having much more. We also have a chance of rainfall everyday next week. The Illinois river is at normal pool level which is a little uncommon for May but the Mississippi river is above flood stage from St Louis north which is caused by continued heavy rainfall in northern Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Grain markets worked lower this week on news of planting progress and it looks to me like the next opportunity for a run up will be near pollination time which is the second half of June and the first half of July for most of the mid-west.
Ryan and Chad have been out scouting since we finished planting beans on Monday. Corn emergence looks to be near perfect with beans having some trouble on white hill soil. Ryan wants to wait until mid-week, see what emerges then set the planter about half rate and replant areas where the bean population is less than 80,000, we seeded 142,000 on most fields. He hopes it will be less than 100 acres if we need to at all. Bean leaf beetles are chewing on the newly emerged bean leafs but have not reached the threshold for spraying yet.
Next week, depending on the weather and the need for replanting we hope to side dress 500 acres of corn with NH3 that received AMS last fall, make sure the sprayer is ready for second pass on beans which we usually start about 3 weeks after planting and finish up some dozing projects before moving on to other we have booked.
Pictures this week are of beans planted into rye, beans planted into a stale seedbed that we tilled and leveled last fall and a field of corn with good emergence and on the picture I took looking across the field you will notice it looks green already.
