やっと暖かくなり、種蒔きは猛烈なスピードで進んでいます。 私は23日から大豆の種まきを始め、息子たちは24日の午後からとうもろこしを植え始めました。 昨日の午後(現地5月2日)には大豆の種まきは、180エーカーを残すだけになり、ライアンは、トウモロコシの種まきを終えて、夜に雨が降る前に、最初の除草剤散布を終えました。 今、12ミリ程の雨が降っていて、まだ続きそうです。 土が乾いていたので、皆が待ちわびていた雨です。 これで、発芽が進み、除草剤も効くことでしょう。
仕事は捗りましたが、問題もありました。 変速機が壊れていたトラクターはまだ治っていないので、販売店が別のトラクターを持ってきました。これで、24条植えのプランターが使えるのですが、それを動かすためには、新しいターボチャージャーと油圧配管が必要でした。Hagie製の薬剤散布機は、潤滑油の配管が破れて潤滑油が流れだし、エンジンが焼き付いてしまいました。 同じ販売店が、36メーター幅の散布パイプ付きの新品を持ってきたので、それを使っていますが、焼き付いたエンジンを交換するのに150万円近く掛かります！
冬にオークションで買った中古のプランターで、1847エーカーに大豆を撒き、大きく仕事が捗りました。
畑の見回りをする時間が、まだないですが息子のチャドによれば、大豆もトウモロコシも芽を出し始めているそうです。 去年の秋に、耕起した後、畑を出来るだけ平らにしましたが、これも良い結果をもたらしました。 畑の75％は春に耕起をせず、そのまま種を植えられたので、土壌水分も失わずに済み、種の発芽状況も揃っています。
今週の写真は、汚れ仕事の堆肥の散布作業、中古だけど私達には新しいプランターで大豆の種を蒔いている所、春の耕起無しに種を蒔くStale seedbedと呼ぶ畑の状態です。
メールの内容は、先週の木曜日時点なので、今頃は種まきが完了しているかもしれません。 機械の故障に悩まされているようですが、種蒔きは急速に進んでいるようです。 農務省が毎週月曜日に出す報告では種まきの進捗はジャンプアップするかもしれませんね。

Our weather finally warmed up and planting season has been fast and furious. I started planting beans on the 23rd and the boy’s started on corn on the afternoon of the 24th. Yesterday afternoon we had only 180 acres of beans left to plant and Ryan finished up all of our first pass chemicals at midnight just before a rain. We have received about ½ inch so far with what looks like more on the way. The soil was really getting dry and everyone wanted this rain, which will help with germination and activate the herbicides. While we accomplished a lot we also had troubles, the tractor with the transmission troubles is still not back together so the dealer brought us another one so we could use our 24 row corn planter, but it needed a new turbo charger and a hydraulic line before we could use it and an oil line ruptured on our Hagie sprayer which pumped all the motor oil out and locked the motor up! So the dealer (same one) brought us a brand new Hagie with 120 foot spray booms and we are using it while ours gets a new motor which will cost $13,500! So far the used planter I bought at an auction this winter has planted 1847 acres of beans which has really made a difference on our planting progress. I have not had time to scout any fields but Chad told me this morning we have both corn and beans emerging already! Last fall we made the decision to level out all the fields we could after primary tillage and this has also worked out well as we have been able to plant into a stale seedbed on about 75% of our fields which saved on moisture and allows seed to emerge more evenly.
