9月24日のおしゃべりclub Bでの会話を一部ご紹介します。
日本の雇用について
日本の科学研究で先端を行く理研が、多くの有期契約の研究者を解雇する予定だという記事を読みました。昨年の記事だったのですが今年になってその半数弱が実際解雇されました。優秀な研究者が有期契約のような不安定な労働条件で働いていることにも驚きましたし、科学研究で成果を出すには時間がかかると想定されるのに、そんなに簡単に解雇していいのだろうかという疑問をもちつつ議論を開始しました。
Riken is one of the top scientific research places in Japan. They've got a handful of Nobel laureates to their name. But I heard they're having some funding issues recently. And they might have to let some researchers go.
と、このような事態に至った原因を資金不足のせいだとした参加者がいました。
Maybe that’s true. Japan, as a whole, is struggling economically and many companies find themselves unable to raise wages for their employees. So RIKEN’s decision is understandable.
と同意する意見も出ました。しかし進んだ科学研究を長年誇りにしてきた日本の主要な研究所がこのような状況で、日本の将来は大丈夫なのでしょうか？すると意外な角度からの意見が…
RIKEN has only restructured their operations. They probably needed to update their research environment to keep pace with rapidly advancing scientific research worldwide."
と、日進月歩の世界の科学研究に歩調を合わせるため、古臭い研究しかできない研究者をリストラしただけだと言うのです。そうであれば、自由競争の資本主義の原則に沿った懸命な決断だと言えるでしょう。残念ながら実際の内部の状況は分からないので、推測しかできません。それにしても
Not just RIKEN, but many other institutes and companies are struggling to maintain their global competitiveness. When people talk about Japan's economy, they often refer to it as 'Japan's lost 30 years.' To turn things around, we need to modernize our business environment.
と、科学界だけでなく日本全体が「失われた30年」を脱却するために、ビジネス環境を改善する必要があるという意見が出ました。その通りですね。でもそれには良質な労働者を雇わなければなりませんが、高い賃金を出さないと呼び込めません。しかし企業や団体にはその体力がありません。そこで、そんな日本を見限って海外に行く若者が増えているという記事を次に読みました。

記事には賃金の具体例なども書かれていて、それを見れば同じスキルでもらえる賃金にあまりにも差があります。これなら海外で働きたいと思うのも当然でしょう。しかし
Perhaps this is a short-term trend, because the yen has recently dropped sharply. Exchange rates are always fluctuating. No one can predict where the yen will stand next year. Moreover, living costs are higher overseas and it might offset the benefits of higher wages.
それもそうですね。例えばドルで賃金をもらって日本円にすればかなりの金額になっても、現在の未曾有の円安が反転してしまえばどうなるかわかりませんし、海外の生活費が高いというニュースも聞きます。でも若者が海外経験を持つのは良いことだと思います。数年前までは内向きな若者が多かったのですが、このような外的要因でも良いので海外進出し、新鮮な刺激をもらって日本に帰り、停滞し続けた日本経済を復活させてもらいたいものです。
