6月25日のおしゃべりclub Bでの会話を一部ご紹介します。
タコに知性はあるのか？
日本人が大好きなタコが世界的にも求められるようになっています。需要の伸びを見て、スペインのある企業がタコの養殖場を準備しています。自然界での水揚げが需要に追い付かない中、確実に供給できる養殖場は願ってもないように思えますが、これに異議を唱える人々がいます。それはタコにも知性があり、閉塞的な養殖場でストレスを与えて育てるのは動物愛護に反するというのが理由です。そこで今回はタコの知性について話し合いました。
Do you think octopuses are intelligent?
と尋ねると、皆
I’m not sure.
ということで、はっきりとした返答は得られませんでした。そこでヒントとして
Octopuses have nine brains, one of which is located in their body and the rest are placed in their arms.
という情報がネット上にあったので、そんなに脳があるなら知性的に違いないと意見を述べると、
Maybe. But it is not clear whether more or bigger brains lead to intelligence. Besides we need to understand what intelligence is in the first place.
と、知性に関する根本的、哲学的問いを発する方がいました。そうですね。知性とはいったい何なのでしょう？
The ability to remember what one experienced in the past and apply the memory to a new experience.
と答えてくれた参加者がいました。なるほど、新たな経験にただ本能的に反応するのではなく、過去の経験を生かしてふさわしく反応するのは知性的でないとできないことかもしれません。
In that sense, even turtles must have intelligence.
と、別な参加者がカメの話を始めました。なぜカメが出てきたかというと、
I keep turtles at home. My daughter and I mainly feed them, and it seems they remember their past experiences of being fed. When we approach the tank where they're housed, they try to come to us, but when my husband and son approach in the same way, they ignore them.
という興味深いエピソードを紹介してくれました。過去に誰からエサをもらったかを覚えていなければそんな行動は取れませんね。ということはカメにも知性があると理解すればいいでしょうか。
Of course, every living thing has its own intelligence. Even plants have intelligence, though they have no brains.
という意見が。その方は植物にも知性があるということを、何かの文献で知ってそれを信じておられるそうです。その上で、
But that doesn't mean we should stop eating plants or animals that have significant intelligence. All living things need to eat other life to survive, and we humans are no different. So, we should support octopus farms as long as they're run under controlled, humane conditions.
そうですね。人も動物も何かを食べなければ生きていけません。我々人間は時に人工的な飼育も行いますが、なるべく人道的な方法でそれを行い、大切な命をいただくという謙虚さを忘れずにいたいものですね。
