2月26日のおしゃべりclub Bでの会話を一部ご紹介します。
神道が外国の若者に受けるわけ
今回は上記のタイトルでセッションを始めました。「わけ」は何だと思いますか。一緒に読んだ記事の中に解答があったのですが、それは日本が誇るアニメです。今海外で日本のアニメは非常に人気がありますが、その中で取り上げられるテーマやエピソードに神道が頻繁に出てくるからなのです。アニメに触れた外国の若者が今まで知らなかった神道に興味を持つようになるのです。しかし
Although young foreigners influenced by anime may be interested in Shinto and visit shrines in Japan, they may not have a deep understanding of the religion and may not be aware of the deities enshrined in those shrines.
という発言が参加者からありました。確かに神道は西洋で主流のキリスト教のような一神教ではなく、様々な神を奉る多神教なので、神社によって拝まれる対象が違います。それでも
Probably these people are merely interested in experiencing the exotic and spiritual atmosphere of the shrines. For many, visiting these shrines is simply part of their tourist experience.
そうかもしれません。彼らにとって神社の建造物自体が非常に珍しくエキゾチックに感じられるでしょうし、アニメに出てきたあの神社に行ってみたいという観光客としての好奇心が優先しているのでしょう。
Despite this, it provides a valuable opportunity for Shinto to increase its visibility around the world.
と、この傾向を前向きにとらえる参加者もいました。そうですね。きっかけは何でも、中には本当に神道の教えを学び実践したいという人も出てくるでしょう。そしてさらに
Shinto matches the trend of today’s world that emphasizes inclusiveness, such as gender equality. It recognizes all entities, including animals, plants, and even non-living objects, as important spiritual beings.
確かに。このような考え方はanimism（精霊信仰）と呼ばれていますね。山や川などの自然も信仰の対象になりますから、気候変動で環境への関心が高まる中、その点でもぴったりかもしれません。
It remains to be seen whether this trend will continue.

Let’s hope not only Shinto but also other aspects of Japanese culture will be widely appreciated and embraced around the world.
