2月28日のおしゃべりclub Bでの会話を一部ご紹介します。
Paternity Leave について
昨年1月、小泉進次郎環境大臣が自身の第一子誕生に際して、2週間の育休を取ると宣言しました。
日本の育児休業制度（childcare leave system）は1991年に制定されましたが、それから30年経った現在、まだ父親の育休（paternity leave）は取得率が非常に低い状態です。
ある女性参加者は
When I gave birth to my child, I took maternity leave and it was very helpful thanks to the good childcare leave system at my workplace.
と述べました。でも彼女は女性ですから、職場に対しても堂々と休暇を要請できたのでしょう。男性の場合、日本では周囲の目や雰囲気から取りづらいようです。小泉氏も、ご自分が取ることでそのような空気（atmosphere）を変えられれば、と願っていました。
In those days, there were many stay-at-home mothers who could take the whole responsibility of child rearing. But these days, because of declining men’s incomes, their wives have no choice but to work.
という発言もあり、そうなると男性も子育てに参加せざるを得ませんね。でも父親の子育てには
Fathers can build a strong bond with their children.
というメリットも確実にありそうです。
