Mayoi Michi

’Midnight Path'

Hanabira chiri kaze ni mai

Kisetsu meguri hibi kurikaesu

Kirei rashii sono hana wo

Yogoreta kutsu de fumiarukou

Flower petals scatter, dancing in the wind

The seasons cycle, the days repeat

Let's walk on those beautiful flowers

With our dirtied shoes

Saki no mienu michi susumi

Iyaki ga sasu no ashita mo onaji

Nukedasezu mayoigo mitai

Doko ni mukaebaii no darou

The path whose end you cannot see continues on

The tomorrow tinged by hatred is the same as always

I can't break out of my loop, like a lost child

Where should I head towards?

Koko mo muda de soko mo muda de ikigurushii

Ikiba ga nai sukui sae nai

Shimensoka no tabiji

Here is no good, over there is no good either, my breath is short

I have nowhere to go, I have no salvation

I have been forsaken by everyone on my journey

Chiri chiri to hana no you ni

Sakihokori sora maitai kedo

Yume miteru dake no ima wo

Kaeru michi wa miezu

Akuru hi mo onaji basho de

Susumi iku hito miteru dake no

Okisari ni sareta tsubomi

Mizu mo ataenai no

Kisetsu wa nagare ookami hoeru

The flower bud wants to bloom and dance in the sky

Like scattering flowers but

Right now it can see only dreams and

Cannot see the path to change it

This bud will spend the following day in the same place

Just watching the people moving on ahead

Abandoned and left behind.

Won't you water it?

The seasons change and the wolves, they howl.

Kyou mo muda de kinou mo muda de ashita mo muda de

Hiraita ato wa tojiru koto naku

Saki* he saki he to iku no?

Today was wasted, and yesterday, and tomorrow too

After I have unfurled, I'll never close

Blooming, moving forward, shall we go?

Chiri chiri to hana no you ni

Sakihokori sora maitai kedo

Yume miteru dake no ima wo

Kaeru michi wa miezu

Akuru hi mo onaji basho de

Susumi iku hito miteru dake no

Okisari ni sareta tsubomi

Mizu mo ataenai no

Risoukyou mo itsumademo

Tsuduku koto wa nai darou

A paradise cannot

Continue on forever

Sakedo chiriiki ashita wo mayou

Bloom, and scatter, and lose your way tomorrow

* The first 'saki' uses the kanji for 'bloom' and the second for 'destination'

** Mayoi michi uses the kanji for 'midnight' but 'mayoi' can also mean 'to be lost' so there's a double meaning in the title, linking to the last line.
