Then the witch let out a fearfully loud laugh ; the toad and the snakes fell to the ground.

“You have come at the right time ”　said the witch; “　If you had come tomorrow, I couldn't have helped you for another year , I will make you a magic drink. Then you must swim to land, sit on the shore and drink all of it before sunrise . Then your tail will become two nice legs , But it will hurt ; it will feel like a sword is cuttting you in half. Those who see you will say you are the loveliest girl alive. You will be able to walk and dance beautifully ; but every step will feel painful , If you want to suffer all this , I have the power to help you”



【日本語訳】


それから魔女は、恐ろしく大きな笑い声をあげました。ヒキガエルとヘビは海底に落ちました。

「お前はちょうどよい時にやってきたよ」　魔女はいいました。　「もし来たのが明日だったら、１年後じゃなきゃお前を助けられなかったろうよ。　お前に魔法の飲み物を作ってやろう。　　それから、お前は陸まで泳いでいき　そして海辺に座って日が昇る前にそれを飲み干すんだ。　そうすれば　お前の尾っぽはステキな２本足になるだろう。　　だけど　痛いよ。　まるで　剣がお前を　まっぷたつにするように感じるだろう。　お前を見たものは　この世で一番美しい娘だと言うだろう。　お前は優雅に歩き、　踊ることが　出来るだろう。　だが、一歩ごとに痛みが走るだろう。　もしそうしたこと　すべてに耐えると望むなら、　お前を助けてやろう」

そして　おぼれかかった王子様を助け、恋に落ちます。

デンマークの童話作家　アンデルセンの描いた　美しくも悲しい純愛物語です。

Now she came to a large, dirty and dark place in the woods. Here were fat , ugly water-snakes floating around. in the middle of this space was a house. It was built from the bones of sailors.

Here sat the Sea-witch: a toad was eating from her mouth: the fat water-snakes were moving around her body.

"I know what you want'” said the Sea-witch: "you are a foolish girl ! But you shall have your own way, for you will get into trouble, my pretty Princess. you no longer want your fish's tail . do you want to walk around on legs like men. do you, so that the young prince will fall in love with you? you want him and an immortal soul at the same time!


【日本語訳】


そうして　彼女は森の広く薄汚れた暗い場所へ　とたどり着きました。　　そこには　太った醜いミズベヘビが　ふわふわ漂っていました。　　この場所の中央には、一軒の家がありました。それは　船員の骨でできていました。ここに海の魔女が座っていました。　ヒキガエルが　魔女の口からエサをたべていました。　太ったミズベヘビが　彼女の体の回りにとぐろをまいていました。　「お前の望んでいるものは分かっているよ！」　　海の魔女は言いました。　「バカな娘だ！でも　お前は自分のやりたいようにやるんだろうよ、　困ったことになるだろうに、かわいいお姫さん。　もう　お前はその人魚の尾っぽは　いらないんだ、　ええ？　人間のように足であるきたいんだね、　若い王子がお前と恋におちるようにね。　お前は　王子と不死の魂が同時に欲しいんだね!」
