ここ数年のUKのクリスマスチャートはオーディションTV番組「X Factor」の優勝者の出すシングルが1位を取ることが続いていました。しかし2009年は違いました。この慣例に異を唱えたファンがFacebookというネットでのキャンペーンを通じてRage Against The Machineの「Killing In The Name」を1位に押しやったのです。ちなみにRage Against The Machineはロサンゼルスを拠点とするヒップホップ－メタルバンド。この「Killing In The Name」は1992年に発表されたデビューアルバム『Rage Against The Machine』からのリードトラックです。とてもクリスマスにかかりそうな曲ではありません。
しかしながらX FactorのWinnerであるJoe McElderryの「The Climb」をダウロードとセールスで5万枚も上回りました。一部の話ではチャート集計の最終日の12月19日に10万枚のダウンロードが「Killing In The Name」にあったと言われています。2009年の中でも印象的なトピックスの一つでしょう。
