LOS ANGELES, Calif., USA (Friday, September 4, 2026) - The World Surf League (WSL) today announced its decision to remove the Surf Abu Dhabi Pro from the 2026 Championship Tour calendar, which was scheduled to take place from November 25 - 29 in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
The WSL initially rescheduled the competition from its original October 14 - 18 dates in an effort to preserve the event on the 2026 CT schedule. However, persistent constraints on international flights and the current situation in the region have made staging the event this season unfeasible.
“We explored every option to keep the Surf Abu Dhabi Pro on the calendar this year,” said Ryan Crosby, WSL CEO. “Unfortunately, the current conditions and logistical limitations made it impossible for us to move forward. It was a difficult decision, but the right one at this time. We value our partnership with Surf Abu Dhabi, and look forward to returning.”
Surf Abu Dhabi remains an integral partner in the league’s global growth. The WSL looks forward to continuing its collaboration with Surf Abu Dhabi, including future editions of the event and expanded opportunities across the region when the time is right.
This decision was also weighed carefully against the new season-long CT format. The goal of this season remains to maintain a balanced competitive schedule to crown the World Champions, with three throwaway results factored into the rankings to ensure competitive integrity across the entire season. That same commitment informed the earlier addition of the Philippines event to the 2026 schedule.
