UCLA prepares to welcome more than 8,800 new undergraduates
New and returning students take part in 80-plus events ranging from book discussions to rock concerts

UCLA students welcomed new arrivals who moved into Rieber Hall last year. This year, some 11,000 undergraduates are slated to move into the residence hall community on the Hill beginning Thursday.
Thousands
of students, including more than 8,880 new undergraduates, will arrive
on campus this week for the start of another academic year at UCLA.
The fall quarter officially begins on Sept. 29, with instruction kicking
off on Oct. 2. Total estimated enrollment is 28,700 undergraduate and
13,500 graduate students.
Before then, new and returning students will be enjoying True Bruin Welcome,
a collection of more than 80 events designed to foster community on
campus and introduce students to campus life at UCLA. Activities run
through Oct. 9 and include everything from campus tours, fairs, concerts
and sporting events to open houses, social gatherings and community
service activities.
Among them:
• Approximately 11,000 undergraduate students start moving back to
campus residence halls on Thursday, Sept. 25. Chancellor Gene Block and
Mrs. Block are scheduled to be on hand to greet them and their families
during the morning of Saturday, Sept. 27, the final day of move-in
weekend.
• Chancellor Block will formally welcome 5,700 freshmen and 3,150 new transfer students to campus on Sunday, Sept. 28, at the L.A. Tennis Center beginning at 4 p.m.
• UCLA’s sixth annual Volunteer Day is set for Monday, Sept. 29. Participants will fan out across the city to work at more than 50 locations, including seniors’ homes, parks, veterans support facilities, schools and food banks.
• Also on Monday, Sept. 29, Kandace Springs, a soulful singer/songwriter from Nashville, and Chance The Rapper, a hip-hop artist from Chicago, will take the stage at the L.A Tennis Center from 8-11 p.m. for Bruin Bash. Hosted by UCLA’s Campus Events Commission and Cultural Affairs Commission, Bruin Bash also features a festival with food trucks, giveaways and student photo-ops from 5-11 p.m. on the Intramural Field. In addition, there will be advanced screenings of “Kill the Messenger” in Ackerman Grand Ballroom and the Beyoncé and Jay-Z film “On the Run” in the Carnesale Commons, Palisades Room. Both films begin at 8 p.m.
• On Tuesday, Sept. 30, many of UCLA’s roughly 1,000 registered student groups and intramural sports teams will be sharing information and giving demonstrations as part of the Enormous Activities Fair.
• On Wednesday, Oct. 1, discussions of the UCLA Common Book
“I Never Had it Made,” Jackie Robinson’s autobiography, will be held
within the on-campus residential community and on the main campus from
6-8 p.m. These discussions will be preceded by a talk by UCLA graduate
and nationally recognized speaker Jullien Gordon from 5-6 p.m. in the
Northwest Campus Auditorium. A screening of “42,” the 2013 Jackie
Robinson biopic, will run from 8-11 p.m. in the Carnesale Commons’
Palisades Room.
