(CNN) --

Three young women are dead and two are in serious condition

after being crushed by a crowd at a Halloween party in Madrid

early Thursday, police said.

The women were among thousands of attendees at "Thriller Music Park,"

an event at Madrid Arena that featured electronic music artists

and a costume contest.

There was a stampede in an arena hallway

that connected the main dance floor to another area, police said.

The five women, between 18 and 25 years old, were the only ones hurt

in the incident, an ambulance spokesman said.

Four of the women, including the three who died, are Spanish.

The nationality of the other injured woman is unknown.

Police are investigating whether someone set off fireworks in the hallway,

the spokesman said.

Thousands of partygoers were unaware of the stampede

until after police arrived and began moving people out slowly.

American electronic musician Steve Aoki was headlining the party.

Aoki released a statement Thursday saying he was "devastated"

by the deaths and injuries.

Apple software, retail chiefs out in sweeping overhaul

SAN FRANCISCO | Mon Oct 29, 2012 6:36pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -

Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook on Monday replaced

the heads of its software and retail units

in the company's most sweeping executive shake-up in a decade

following embarrassing problems with its new mapping program

and unpopular store-related decisions.

shake-up : 刷新

Software chief Scott Forstall, who oversaw the launch

of the flawed mapping software

and much criticized Siri voice-enabled assistant,

will leave Apple next year and serve as an advisor to Cook in the meantime.

Forstall, seen as a polarizing figure inside Apple,

had been billed as one of the future candidates to take the top job at Apple.

He was the executive behind the panned Apple Maps app

that the company announced with much fanfare in summer.

The moves, which come a little more than a year into Cook's tenure as CEO,

were described by Apple as a way to increase "collaboration"

across its hardware, software and services business.

"These changes show that Tim Cook is stamping his authority

on the business," Ben Wood, analyst with CCS Insight, said.

"Perhaps disappointed with the Maps issues,

Forstall became the scapegoat."

New York (CNN) --

Monday is going to be ugly.

Three major public transportation systems in three big cities --

New York, Washington and Philadelphia -- will be closed

as Hurricane Sandy threatens the East Coast.

Close to 11 million commuters will be without service.

In the city that never sleeps, New York's Metropolitan Transportation

Authority was under orders from Gov. Andrew Cuomo

to begin the suspension of subway service at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Bus service was scheduled to stop at 9 p.m.

Cuomo told reporters.

"A situation like this, you don't want to be overly panicked

(CNN) -- Apple is expected to announce a smaller 7.85-inch version
of its iPad at a press conference in San Jose, California, Tuesday morning.
Rumors and leaks have been plentiful ahead of the announcement,
as they were for last month's iPhone 5 unveiling,
but there's still the potential for a few surprises.

・A smaller iPad would face plenty of competition

・Steve Jobs railed against 7-inch tablets,
but customers seem to want the smaller size

・A cheaper, more portable iPad would be used more outside the home

Analysis:

Sprint-Softbank deal's big on size,

small on change

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO | Mon Oct 15, 2012 11:12pm EDT

(Reuters) -

It's this year's biggest technology acquisition

and the largest outbound deal in Japan's history.

But game-changing, it is not.

Softbank Corp's (9984.T) pricey $20 billion bid

to buy control of No. 3 U.S. telecoms company Sprint Nextel Corp (S.N)

marks a bold move by billionaire CEO Masayoshi Son

beyond his flagging home market.

Some analysts say it hands the U.S. company much-needed firepower

to buy peers and build out high-speed networks.

But if Son succeeds, Sprint will still struggle to win customers in a market

dominated by the twin towers of the U.S. mobile landscape -

Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N) and AT&T Inc (T.N) -

while T-Mobile and MetroPCS Communications Inc (PCS.N) move to team up.

That market dynamic will persist, analysts say.

Son, an unusually aggressive risk-taker

in a cautious Japanese corporate culture

who brought the iPhone to Japan,

may still have more surprises up his sleeve,

but analysts do not believe

that the Sprint deal by itself can undermine the two U.S. market leaders'

virtually unassailable position.
