Clashes as austerity anger
drives Europe strikes
(CNN) --
A wave of anger over austerity is sweeping across Europe
as workers fed up with government spending cuts and tax increases
took to the streets in a coordinated day of action Wednesday.
Some of the largest and occasionally violent protests took place in Spain,
where a general strike is under way.
Public transport has been shut down, or disrupted,
while many schools, shops, factories and airports are closed.
There were also significant walkouts
-- and outbreaks of violence -- in Portugal, Greece and Italy.
Limited protests are taking place in other countries,
including France and Belgium --
and even in Germany where the traditionally strong economy has taken a hit.
Transport across the continent is being disrupted by the strikes.
Hundreds of flights have been grounded,
and there are severe reductions in intercity rail services
and local transit systems.

Galaxy S III
Samsung Galaxy S III dethrones iPhone
as world's top seller
CNN) --
For years tech pundits have been searching for an "iPhone" killer
-- a mythical new device that would dethrone Apple's mighty handset
as the most admired or popular smartphone.
It may be already here.
For the first time, Samsung's Galaxy S III overtook Apple's iPhone 4S
to become the world's best-selling smartphone model
for the third quarter (July through September) of 2012,
according to new research by Strategy Analytics.
The Galaxy S III shipped 18 million units worldwide,
compared with 16.2 million for the iPhone 4S.
That's 11% of all smartphones shipped on the planet.
But the Galaxy S III reign atop the sales rankings will likely be short-lived.
As Strategy Analytics pointed out, iPhone 4S sales waned
in the third quarter as consumers waited for the iPhone 5,
which went on sale September 21.
Apple sold 5 million iPhone 5s that first weekend and is expected to sell
many millions more during this holiday shopping season.

iPad Mini review: More than just a smaller face
(CNN) -
Apple's latest tablet comes in a smaller, pocketable, gripable,
adorable new travel size.
But the iPad Mini is more than just a smaller face --
it's a whole new product with its own killer features and disappointments.
Joining the iPhone and 10-inch iPad in Apple's iOS lineup,
the 7.8-inch iPad enters a crowded market of 7-inch tablets.
Here's a closer look at the Mini and how it stacks up against its competitors.
The body
Applying the patented Apple shrink-ray wasn't the only change
to the iPad body.
The unibody shell is smooth and rounded on the back and edges --
more so than the 10-inch iPad.
The lack of sharp edges makes it more confortable to hold in your hands.

2012 Obama VS Romney

Obama, Romney focus on swing states
in late campaigning
COLUMBUS, Ohio |
(Reuters) -
President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney
engaged in frantic get-out-the-vote efforts and made final pleas
to voters in a sprint through battleground states
that will determine who wins their agonizingly close White House race
on Tuesday.
make a plea to ~ : ~に訴えかける
Both candidates sought to generate strong turnout from supporters
and to sway independent voters to their side in the last hours of a race
that polls showed was deadlocked nationally.
Obama had a slight lead in the eight or nine battleground states
that will decide the race on Tuesday.
The latest Reuters/Ipsos national poll of likely voters,
a daily tracking poll, gave Obama a slight edge, with 48 percent support
compared to Romney's 46 percent.
The difference was within the 3.4 percentage point credibility interval,
which allows for statistical variation in Internet-based polls.
Obama was up 4 percentage points in must-win Ohio,
50 percent to 46 percent, and held slimmer leads in Virginia and Colorado.
Romney led in Florida by 1 percentage point, the poll found.
The president, with a final-day itinerary that included stops
in Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa, urged voters to stick with him
and trust that his economic policies are working.
He traveled with rocker Bruce Springsteen.
