Should I have done that？
I should have done that. を、
「（していない）を、するべきだった」 と
覚えている私。
Should I have done that？
↑「（してない）を、するべきだった？」 と
思ったのであるが、
どうも、、、①と②の使い方ができるらしい。
① やったことに対して、
「（やってしまったけど）その行為をするべき
だった？（しなくてよかったかも）」
＝ 後悔・不安
② やらなかったことに対して、
「（やらなかったけど）するべきだった？」
＝ 未練・確認
と、ここまではいいんです。
“やったこと”・“やらなかったこと”、
真逆のパターン、どっちも使うと
まだ理解できる。
しかし、私のように英語を学ばれている
みなさん、次の文章、どない思います？
私は、脳みそのバグがおさまりません。
Shouldn’t you have done that? は、
「したほうがよかったんじゃない？」
（すべきだったんじゃないの？）
「しなかった方がよかったんじゃないの？」
では、ないんですか！ と、英語に喧嘩を
売りそうです。
“しない”という”行動”をしたことにたいして、
そのような“行動”をしない方がよかったんで
ない？ ＝ したほうがよかったんじゃない？
ですかね。
神様、来世は、私をイギリス、アメリカ、
カナダ、オーストラリア、ニュージーランド、
アイルランド人にしてください。
寝言で、Shouldn’t you have done that? と、
脳みそのバグなしで言ってみたいです。

“Should I have done that?”
I used to think "I should have done that"
only meant "I didn't do it, but I should have."
So, I thought "Should I have done that?"
meant the same thing in a question.
But ... it turns out there are two ways
to use it!
１．For something you DID:
"I did it, but was it the right thing to
do?" (Regret or worry)
2. For something you DIDN'T do:
"I didn't do it, but should I have?
(Checking or missing an opportunity)
I can handle that. I can understand two
opposite patterns.
But everyone, if you're a beginner like me,
what do you think about this next sentence?
My brain is literally crashing...
“Shouldn’t you have done that?”
(Meaning: You should have done it, right?)
I was like, "Wait! Doesn't it mean 'You
shouldn't have done it'???"
I almost wanted to start a fight with the
English language!
So, you mean doing the "action of NOT
doing it" was something I "shouldn't have
done"? Which means... it was better to
actually "do it"? My head hurts!
Dear God, please let me be born in an
English-speaking country in my next life—
the UK, US, Canada, Australia, NZ, or Ireland.
I want to say, "Shouldn’t you have done that?"
in my sleep without my brain crashing!
