インドの友人から送られてきた「インド独立の父」マハトマ・ガンジーの逸話だ。正義感の強い誇り高き人物だったようだが、ユーモアのセンスがある上に頭の回転が速く、インド人からすれば溜飲を下げることのできる逸話なのだろう。

マハトマ・ガンジー、興味深い人格を示す愛すべき逸話
When Mahatma Gandhi was studying law at the University College of London , a professor, whose last name was Peters, disliked him intensely and always displayed animosity towards him. Also, because Gandhi never lowered his head when addressing him as he expected, there were always "arguments" and confrontations.
マハトマ・ガンジーがロンドン大学ユニバーシティカレッジで法律を学んでいた時、名字をピーターズという教授は彼を毛嫌いし、いつも敵意をむき出しにしていた。又、ガンジーは教授に話しかける際、教授の期待に反し、頭を下げなかったため、二人はいつも論争し、対立していた。
One day, Mr. Peters was having lunch at the dining room of the University, and Gandhi came along with his tray and sat next to the professor. The professor said,"Mr Gandhi, you do not understand. A pig and a bird do not sit together to eat." Gandhi looked at him as a parent would a rude child and calmly replied, "You do not worry professor. I'll fly away," and he went and sat at another table.
ある日、教授が大学の食堂で昼食をとっていると、自分のトレーを持ったガンジーがやって来て教授の隣に座った。教授が「ガンジー君、分かっていないようだね。豚と鳥が一緒に食事をすることなどあり得ないんだよ」と言うと、ガンジーは躾がなっていない子供を見る親のような目で教授を見ると、「ご心配なく、教授。私は直ぐにここを飛び去りますから」と静かに答え、別のテーブルへと移動した。
Mr. Peters, reddened with rage, decided to take revenge on the next test paper, but Gandhi responded brilliantly to all questions. Mr. Peters, unhappy and frustrated, asked him the following question:
教授は怒りで真っ赤になると、次の試験でリベンジすることを決意した。しかし、ガンジーは全ての問題に見事な解答をしてしまう。教授はそれが面白くなく、不機嫌になって次の質問をした。
"Mr Gandhi, if you were walking down the street and found a package, and within was a bag of wisdom and another bag with a lot of money, which one would you take?"
「ガンジー君、道を歩いていたら箱があったとしようじゃないか。中には智慧の詰まったバッグと、もう一つ、大金の入ったバッグがあったとすると、君はどちらを取るかね？」
