The Centipede
ムカデ
A single guy decided life would be more fun if he had a pet. So he went to the pet store and told the owner that he wanted to buy an unusual pet. After some discussion, he finally bought a talking centipede, which came in a little white box to use for his house.
独身男がペットを飼えば日々の生活も楽しくなるかなと考えた。そこで彼はペットショップに行き、店のオーナーに少し変わったペットを買い求めたいと申し出た。しばし話をした後、彼は最終的に会話ができるムカデを購入した。ムカデは白の小さな箱に入れられた。
He took the box back home, found a good spot for the box, and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to church with him. So he asked the centipede in the box,
"Would you like to go to church with me today? We will have a good time."
But there was no answer from his new pet.
彼は箱を持ち帰り、置き場所を定めると、早速、彼の新しいペットを教会に誘い出してみようかと考えた。そこで箱の中のムカデに向かい、「今日、僕と一緒に教会に行ってみないか？楽しい時間になると思うんだ」と訊ねた。しかし、返事がない。
This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few minutes and then asked again,
"How about going to church with me and receive blessings?"
But again, there was no answer from his new friend and pet. So he waited a few minutes more, thinking about the situation.
彼は不愉快に思ったが、少し時間をおいて「一緒に教会に行って祝福を受けるというのはどうだい？」と再度訊ねてみた。しかし、彼の友でありペットであるムカデからは返事がない。どうしてなんだろうと考えながら、彼は数分待った。
The guy decided to invite the centipede one last time. This time he put his face up against the centipede's house and shouted,
"Hey, would you like to go to church with me and learn about God?"
そして、彼はムカデをもう一度だけ誘い出すことに決めた。ただし、今回ばかりは顔をムカデの箱に向け、大きな声で叫んだ。「あのさ、僕と一緒に教会に行き、神さまについて学ぶというのはどうなんだ？」

This time, a little voice came out of the box,
"I heard you the first time! I'm putting my shoes on!"
今回は箱から小さな声が聞こえてきた。
「最初から聞こえているよ！僕は今、靴を履いているんだ！」
