イタリア人をからかったものだが、昔、私が仕事を通じてお世話になったイタリア人の友人たちなら「うまいこと言う」と笑い飛ばすだろう。
An elderly Italian man who lived on the outskirts of Rimini , Italy , went to the local church for confession. When the priest slid open the panel in the confessional, the man said:
年老いたイタリア人が懺悔のために教会を訪れた。神父が懺悔室の仕切り板を開くと、老人は話を始めた。
"Father, during World War II, a beautiful Jewish woman from our neighbourhood knocked urgently on my door and asked me to hide her from the Nazis. So I hid her in my attic."
「神父様、第二次世界大戦の最中、隣に住んでいた美しいユダヤ人の女性が我が家のドアを叩き、ナチスからかくまって欲しいと頼んできたんです。そこで、私は彼女を屋根裏部屋にかくまったのです。」
The priest replied: "That was a wonderful thing you did, and you have no need to confess that."
神父はこう答えます。「それは素晴らしい行いでした。懺悔する必要などありません。」
"There is more to tell, Father. She started to repay me with sexual favours. This happened several times a week, and sometimes twice on Sundays."
「続きがあるんです、神父様。彼女はセックスで私に報いるようになったんです。週に数回、日曜日には2回ということもありました。」
The priest said, "That was a long time ago and by doing what you did, you placed the two of you in great danger, but two people under those circumstances can easily succumb to the weakness of the flesh. However, if you are truly sorry for your actions, you are indeed forgiven."
神父は言います。「もう大昔の話だし、彼女をかくまうことであなた方二人は危機的状況に陥ったのです。そういう状況で肉体的な弱さに負けてしまったのは致し方ないでしょう。しかし、もし心から反省しているなら、あなたは許されます。」
"Thank you, Father. That's a great load off my mind. I do have one more question."
「有難うございます、神父様。心が軽くなりました。ただ、もう一つだけ聞きたいことがあるんです。」
"And what is that?" asked the priest.
「何が聞きたいのですか？」と神父が尋ねた。
"Should I tell her the war is over?'
「戦争は終わったと彼女に伝えるべきでしょうか？」
