CL: My first chance to hear you was of course with P-Funk. Isn’t it true you not only were the guitarist but also the Musical Director with Parliament/Funkadelic/P-Funk?
BBMc: Yes I was the Musical Director from 1980-2008 on and off, mostly on.
CL: What has been the most rewarding part of the Parliament-Funkadelic experience for you?
BBMc: There is a saying that goes "funk is its own reward."
CL: I'm so tempted to use that quote as the title of this. I'm sorry, please go on...
BBMc: The fact that I got to travel the world sharing my talents to whomever cared to listen with one of the baddest bands on the planet, not to mention one of my favorite bands- has to be among the most in terms of reward, and there are many. Working with George Clinton, Gary Shider, Eddie Hazel, and the rest of the MUGS was also quite a reward. Also, I was already known somewhat from being a part of Herbie Hancock's Headhunter band and later with Hancock himself...but starting with the Brides of Dr Funkenstein and later P-Funk took me to a whole new place. Playing with P-Funk put me in a whole new category and on the map for real!
CL: So we have covered Funk, Jazz, Alt.Rock, Hardcore and Ska. Let’s not forget Classic Rock. Tell us about working with Ron Wood & Bernard Fowler of the Rolling Stones.
BBMc: That was another cool experience. Bernard and Ron Wood are the coolest souls. Everybody at that session was with a name-brand band. Also, I saw Ike Turner whom I'd met before and loved. I actually don't know how that one came about. I think it was one of George's (Clinton's) management people. Great night though. Ron wood is too funny! He pretty much led the session. Not too much memory on this night, but I had a lot of fun working with Bernie Worrell, George Clinton, Bernard Fowler, Ron Wood etc…I do have something I'd like to share, I was in the lounge waiting for the session to start and in came Ron. After the usual handshakes and hugs I asked him, “Hey how did you get that bass sound on 'Spanish Boots?'”...a Jeff Beck song he played bass on. I thought he might not remember but I wanted him to know I knew his work, and he looked at me and said "WOW!" As he walked into the studio he turned around and answered "it was a Jazz bass and a Marshall on full." My jaw dropped.
CL：僕が初めてあなたの演奏を聴いたのはP-Funkだった。あなたはギタリストだけでは無くParliament/Funkadelic/P-Funkのミュージカル・ディレクターだったって本当？
BBMc：そうだよ。1980年から2008年の間、そうだったり、そうじゃなかったり、ま、ほとんどはそうだったんだけど。
CL：Parlieament-Funkadelicのメンバーとして、一番価値があった事って何？
BBMc：“ファンクはそれそのものが価値だ。”って言うんだよ。
CL：その言い回し、このインタビューのタイトルにしたいなぁ。続けて。
BBMc：僕は世界中を旅して、世界一のバンドのひとつ、かつ僕が一番好きなバンドのひとつP-Funkを聴きたいと言うみんなの為に演奏をしてきた。それこそが価値であり、報酬だった。他にもたくさんあるけどね。George Clinton、Gary Shider、Eddie Hazel, そして他のメンバー達と一緒に仕事をすることも、大きな価値だ。僕はその頃既に、HerbieHancock & The Headhuntersのメンバーとして知られる存在ではあったけれども、 Brides of Dr Funkenstein、後に P-Funkと仕事をする様になって、世界が大きく変わったんだ。P-Funkとの仕事は、僕を全く違うカテゴリーに置き、全く違う方向に向かわせたんだ。
CL：ファンク、ジャズ、オルタナティブ・ロック、ハードコア、スカをカバーした。クラシック・ロックを忘れない様にしよう。 Rolling Stones のRon WoodとBernard Fowlerについて聞かせて。
BBMc：あれも本当にいい経験だったよ。BernardとRon Woodは本当にいいブラザーなんだ。あのセッションに参加したメンバーは、みな名の知れた人ばかりだった。Ike Turnerもいたよ。彼には以前会った事もあるし、大好きなんだ。どうやってあの機会が来たのかあまり良く覚えてないんだけど、多分ジョージ・クリントンのマネージメントを通してだったと思う。最高の夜だった。RonWoodは面白い人だよ。セッションをリードしたのは彼だった。たくさんの事を覚えている訳ではないけど、 Bernie Worrell、George Clinton、Bernard FowlerやRon Wood達と仕事をしたんだ、楽しいに決まっている。ひとつ紹介したいエピソードがあるよ。僕はラウンジに座ってセッションが始まるのを待っていた、そこにRon Woodが入って来たんだ。通常の握手とハグで挨拶した後、僕はこう尋ねた。“Spanish Bootsのベースサウンドはどうやって出したの？”Jeff Beckの曲で彼がベースを弾いたものだ。彼は覚えてないかもと思ったけれど、僕が彼の仕事を知っている事を伝えたかったんだ。Ronは僕を見て、“Wow!”と叫んだ。彼はスタジオに入って行き、振り向くと、“あれはジャズベースだ、マーシャルはフルボリュームでな。”と答えた。僕はひっくり返るほど驚いたよ。
