今日は英語の話。
「be supposed to」
実は映画でもよく聞く表現なんですけどイマイチ意味が分かってなかったんですよね、恥ずかしながら。
"be supposed to"は「そういう状態が想定される」ということで、平たく言うと「そうしなきゃいけない」とか「そうするべき」のような意味です。
I am supposed to be a good father.
良い父親でいなきゃ
You are supposed to answer about the inquiry by tomorrow.
明日までに回答してください
What am I supposed to do?
どうすりゃいいんだよ!
これを過去形で使うとちょっと複雑で、そうすべきだった(でも実際にはしていない)という意味になります。
I was supposed to eat Japanese soba noodles, but I ate ramen noodles in spite of Saturday.
路麺の日なのに立ち食い蕎麦じゃなくてラーメン食べちゃったよ。
I was supposed to be calm when my big boss ignored me, but I was upset.
あの時は冷静でいるべきだったなあ
意味をしっかりと理解しないと日本人が日常会話で使うのは難しい表現ですよね。頑張ってマスターしようっと。早速今日メールで使ってみました。
I am supposed to send your document to a translator by tomorrow. I would be glad, if you could give it to me tonight.
Hey guys, how are you?
Today's topic is an usueful English expression "be supposed to". To be honest, I haven't understood this expression well even though I learn English for long time. I've heard actually this expression in many movies. I am really embarrassing.
By the way, the reminder feature in Ameba blog is really interesting. I can remeber what I did at the same time 1 year ago. I participated the 2nd secret meeting with Pornaleff-san and Yanagibashi-san and Ririka-san on July 2018. It was good memory.
I haven't eaten Japanese soba noodles at home for a long time. It was actually good. I took too carbohydrate today. But sometimes OK.
Thank you for reading.
