On May 8, a memorial service for Yoichi Hatta (1886-1942), a Japanese engineer who dedicated himself to dam construction during the Japanese rule of Taiwan, was held in Tainan City, southern Taiwan.
President William Lai Ching-te attended the service and stated that "(Hatta) was both Japanese and Taiwanese," while emphasizing the close Japan-Taiwan relations.
Hatta's contributions to infrastructure development are highly evaluated in Taiwan.

The venue was near the Wushantou Dam, completed in 1930, where a bronze statue of Hatta is also erected.
A memorial service is held every year on May 8, the anniversary of his death.
Hatta was a Kanazawa City native and worked as a civil engineer in Taiwan under Japanese rule.
He was allegedly led the construction of large-scale water conservancy facilities, including the Wushantou Dam, and transformed southwestern Taiwan into a major granary.
