On Dec. 17, at a meeting summarizing the Defense Ministry's activities for this year, Russian DM Andrei Beloussov claimed that 6,000 square kilometers had been seized in the fighting with Ukraine this year.
He explained that it's an increase of about 30% from the previous year.
It's equivalent to an area about three times the size of Tokyo Pref.

DM Beloussov explained that the pace of advance of each unit was 1.5 to 2 times faster than last year.
He released that they had recaptured Kursk Oblast in western Russia and seized the eastern Ukrainian fortress of Kupyansk and key bases in the Donbas region.
He also said that they had seized 400 square kilometers in the southern Zaporizhia Oblast and the eastern Dnipropetrovsk Oblast since November.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has denied that Russia has taken control of Kupyansk.
